Reminds me of when I was in high school and we hada a Japanese exchange student. Dad was home from work by 530 every day M-F , didn't work weekends.

One day she tells him "you lazy man, my dad no come home all week, work too late sleep in city"

weird culture.

A lot of this Japanese "overwork" thing is bullshite. I used to work for a company that had Japanese staff in los Angeles. Dudes would come in at noon or 1PM just so they could call Japanese customers at 8PM to appear to be working overtime extra hard. This is a cultural thing, but dont be fooled into thinking all Japanese work 18 hour days. That might have been true once, but not any more.

It said the 159 hours was over the course of a month, not one pay check.

Let me tell you an essential truth about the way Japanese approach work . In general the Japanese work much longer hours but are less efficient. We used to laugh at how much effort they put in to outlast one another - getting absolutely nothing accomplished except meeting each other expectations/ one- upping each other. Lots of hours lots of make work.

So basically 80 hour work weeks.

What kind of pansies are they raising over there? "Land of the Rising Sun"? Land of the slackers more likely.

Okay - so you're at work every day (boo hoo), and you're there about 11 1/2 hours a day (maybe 12 if you take a 30 minute lunch).

I mean, come on - you got 12 hours to rest - EVERY day.

I don't see the big deal. I've done 80+ many times, especially when I was doing shift work doing 12 hour shifts. Plus a reporter working tons of hours? Were they just writing, interviewing people, traveling? Doesn't sound like labor intensive work..

while at chrysler, they needed to get mini vans out and were asking 2nd shift to come in 2 hours early, stay 3 hours late, mon-sunday.

guys did it for 3 months, and their bodies broke down, got sick, body wore down. they were giving their bodies no time to heal and recover.

i lol'd, i did my 10 hours mon-sat, no extra OT and felt great, they gave uncle sam a shite load of extra tax $$$ and they got sick or wore down.

frick OT, it's for suckers
