Bogdan Bogdanovic just signed a 3 year, 36 million dollar deal with the Sacramento Kings. He is going to be a rookie. Why does he get extra money instead of being slotted into the rookie salary wage scale? He was drafted 27th overall.

quote:

The Phoenix Suns selected the 6-foot-6 Bogdanovic with the No. 27 pick in the 2014 NBA draft and traded his rights to the Kings as part of a deal during the 2016 draft. Because three NBA drafts have passed since Bogdanovic was selected, he is not bound by a rookie-scale contract, which allows him to sign a more lucrative deal.
Article also mentions they signed him to this contract to lure him from Europe

Thanks, I didn't realize that the rookie wage was eliminated after 3 drafts.

Yeah, he was probably making 3 million euros in net income so that would probably be about $5-6 million in a typical NBA contract where taxes are paid by the individual. Obviously this is much better, and I am surprised that they didn't just give him exactly one dollar more than his equivalent value in Euros. Seems like they were bidding against themselves.

He was pretty good in international play, but that's a heck of a contract for someone with no nba experience.

Maybe it was going to take a large raise to make him come over to the NBA. Or maybe his agent made it seem that way because it's good business

I think his agent took the Kings to the cleaners

He gave an interview on Turkish tv where he said he was really excited to go the NBA after winning the Euroleague title. He'll be a really good player in the NBA, I think. He was either the best or second best player on the best non NBA team in the world.

I can't think of the last Euro prospect since Fran Vasquez who just never came over.

SAC has to spend a bunch to get to the salary floor, and I can't see a ton of FAs busting down that door

That's why it was more than expected

He was a star in europe already. He's not 19. Showed up in olympics. Silver. Serbia has less than 8 million people. Basically chicago metro.

Serbs lost to usa 94-91 in group play.
Machine like offense. Solid d.
High expectations.
He wont be scared to excel. Where's buddy? Same position. That will be competition in practice.
