Just picked up an '87 DY38 a couple weeks ago. I've been pretty blown away by it, I believe it can easily hold its own against guitars costing triple (or more) what I gave.

I have a cheapo Alvarez. It's fine. I've seen a Yairi at guitar center. They seemed well aware of its price.

Did sound nice though.

Yairi Guitars are stellar and packed with value for buyers/owners, particularly on the used market - steals are frequently found for what they are. Handmade out of top-notch materials with supreme craftsmanship. A Japanese version of Martin's Nazareth division is a fair comparison.

Fret Shack!!!

Brief hijack OP.

Mexican Stratocasters. Are there any years/periods to avoid? Or are they all the same? Just find one that feels right in the hand and pay a guy like you to change out crap hardware?

Sorry OP.

Again on the Yairi I picked up. It was used, but not priced as a steal. They knew it's value. Did sound GREAT compared to a standard Alvarez. And a smoker owned it too. I always check that with a sniff before buying. There is nothing getting smoke smell out of an acoustic guitar.

Ok. I've hijacked and now I am rambling.

I have played them...and also own now a lower level Alvarez (not a Yairi)...I have been impressed by both the top end products and the low end ...Alvarez guitars....all models...do not get enough credit imho.

My observation on MIM Fender is that they keep getting better and better with each passing year, quite honestly. I wouldn't particularly avoid any year/production windows. Do exactly as you say - find one that works for you and then tweak to its needs/your needs.

Thanks again. If I lived closer I'd send business/cash your way.

Cool. Mine is an '87 DY-38, with the "50th Anniversary" plaque on back of the headstock. I regularly play with a friend with a mid sixties Martin D18, this Yairi compares very well with his. The Martin is a bit louder, but the Yairi has the tone.
