The director of Deadpool 2, whomever he or she may be, has quite the task ahead of them. The sequel has to be as good as, if not better, than the massively popular original, while still keeping the budget manageable. Tim Miller’s ability to make a $58 million movie look like it cost at least three times that was a massive accomplishment on his part, but he left Deadpool 2, claiming the dreaded “creative differences” with Ryan Reynolds. The feud was reportedly over “Miller’s vision of a bigger, splashier, costlier Merc with a Mouth,” while Reynolds wanted “to stick with a lower budget and ample sarcasm.” Throw in abundant violence, and they’ve found their man.

Mashable reports that David Leitch, not Quentin Tarantino, is the “strong frontrunner” for Deadpool 2. Nothing is official, and “representatives for 20th Century Fox and Leitch did not immediately respond to after-hours requests for comment,” but he certainly makes sense. John Wick is one of the best action movies of the decade, and it was made for $20 million. Leitch and his John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski were also second-unit directors on Captain America: Civil War, where they were praised by Joe Russo for being an “all-star team.” He added, “We cared so much about the action and the quality of the action, and we knew we had to work really hard to up our game.”

Now it’s on Leitch to stage a better action sequence than Civil War‘s famous airport brawl, with a quarter of the money. No pressure.
