educational/historical tour guide then maybe.
This and the fact that I have no gear since I sold what little I had years ago.

Not sure about guides. But you can rent gear.
The guides I saw prices in in Montana were very expensive. Around $150 a day, or more. I think that was with gear, food, and everything.

Where are you wanting to go?

Day dreaming about taking off up to the smokies by myself. Probably North Carolina.
Willing to join one of their group trips and not wanting the hassle of fooling with gear, etc and arranging transportation

There are many inexpensive semi light weight options out there. You wouldn't need to spend more than $200.
What's your goal? A week in the woods?

Just thinking three or four nights.
You referenced a pack. What about sleeping bag, tent, stove, cooking pots, food, etc, etc.
I dabbled in it a little after college and figured out shortly that La was not the place for a person to live who wanted to backpack within a 6 hour drive.
I'm going to find one of the services where I just show up with a pair of boots and some personal items and let them take care of the planning, gear, logistics, etc. Especially true sine I will probably fly up there.

No. You might also check out this "inn to inn" hiking trip in Shanendoah Park. You would need small pack and boots but could go without tent and such. I did something similar in Greece, though I would do the opposite and hike into a village for lunch and hangout then home out into countryside to camp in a tent on the beach. Anyway, this might be an option.

sleeping bag: $57 Teton sports (amazon)
tent: $70 (can be as cheap as $25) amazon or bass pro
stove: $10 Amazon
pots: $15 walmart
Food: one person, four days, $50
You can even throw in a sleeping pad for $40
