One day in Savannah

Headed to Savannah in a couple weeks. Going to be checking in Thursday around 9, and leaving around lunch on Saturday. We've got one day, what should we do? Just eat and stroll downtown?

Thats about it. Downtown is small with some cool historical sites. Stay away from the restaurants on the river, I recommend "The Grey." Be sure to visit one of the rooftop bars just before sunset.

Is staying downtown a must, or am I better off going out toward I-95 and using uber?

I usually stay downtown when I go for work. Can get a suite at The Brice on hotwire for $100 per night.

I did this once back in college. Then I spent a day in Jessica too. Different days. I had to replenish my electrolytes.

If you want to do the downtown/romantic thing, stay in downtown Savannah. If you are looking for a beach trip, I'd slide down to Saint Simons.
As far as downtown goes, stay away from the Pirates House and River Street. They are both tourist traps. You might want to walk down River Street once just to see it. Most of the best action is in City Market where the locals hang out. Also, the Mansion is kind of a hike from everything except Forsyth Park.
Hotels: The Kehoe House, The Cotton Sail, The Bohemian, The Marshall House, or Andaz. The Westin is nice but it's across the river (still easy to get back and forth) and has a great view of downtown Savannah that a lot of people don't get to see.
Restaurants: Alligator Soul, The Olde Pink House, Mrs. Wilkes (Closed on weekends), Vic's on the River, Crystal Beer Parlor, Jazz'd. Garibaldi's, Circa 1875, B. Matthew's (your wife will love this place for brunch), 17Hundred90, Corleone's, B&D Burgers (great sports bar and fantastic burgers), and The Public.
Bars: Rock's on the Roof, Top Deck, The Distillery, Churchill's, Molly MacPherson's, Jen's and Friends, Treylor Park (good food too), Circa (also in the restaurnat list), Savannah Smiles (if y'all are way fricked up and like dueling piano bars), Chive (not a big fan of the food but kind of a neat bar), Sorry Charlies, Kevin Barry's, and Six Pence.

There was some restaurant downtown that had the most amazing chicken and waffles appetizer I've ever had. I can't think of the name but perhaps someone could help me out - it is on the top floor/roof of a 4 or 5 story building next door to the Hilton Hotel. It's right on the water so the views are beautiful as well.

There's not a Hilton on the water. I assume you mean the Hyatt? I also assume you are talking about Rocks on the Roof which is the restaurant/bar on top of the Bohemian Hotel.

I'm actually going to Savannah in a week, but the cheapest I'm seeing at The Brice is $179

Yeah...I'm not seeing any other deal like that either. Prob a mid-week price...

Go to Sandfly and visit Wormsloe, eat lunch at Driftaway Cafe

It has always been mid week when I've gone, but I've stayed at the Brice probably 6 times in the last year for around $100 by using Hotwire

Great list!
Can't think of anything to add off the top of my head except Green Truck.

And I prefer Top Deck to Rocks on the Roof.

Most importantly, y'all don't forget that downtown Savannah DOES NOT have an open container law. So put your drink in a plastic cup and get outside and enjoy the city.

Thanks for this. Last night I was talking to a friend of mine who is moving to California about this. It's definitely going to be an adjustment.

Thanks for the recs!
We did a day in Savannah two weekends ago. We started at The Public, (walked from our hotel, the weather was amazing.) Fantastic meal. I had the pork chop and my wife had the NY strip. After dinner we walked over to The Distillery, for an after dinner drink (Westbrook 5th anniversary for me, wine for the wife.) Later that night we walked over to Lulu's Chocolate Bar for dessert. I the chocolate toffee crunch cake and my wife had raspberry creme brulee. Both were phenomenal. It was a great night, we will definitely return for a longer trip in the future.
