I bought member units in an assisted living facility. Also, a hog confinement building leased to the operator. I'd consider these alternative investments, and you needed to certify yourself as accredited. Both have done o.k. The assisted living facility took longer, and almost went broke as the guy that started it built too many in our area. Got sold last year, and I got my money, and a small return out of it. The pig building performs very, very well. About seven years to pay it off, and income covers this to a large degree. After it was paid off, it continues to have a very good return.

That stuff sounds fun.

Long way to go to get accredited for me though.

In practice, you're accredited if you say you are.

What is a hot confinement building?

Does that unit have a ticker symbol? Just kidding.

Part of my balanced portfolio.

One part that actually has done pretty well since my speculative equities have gotten crushed as is well documented on here.

Seriously, what is it? Is it a place where they store pigs?

Sometimes pigs are born in them, other times fed and kept all the way to finish. Their manure runs straight through the floors. In liquid form. Piped out to be used most often as fertilizer. And when the wind is right, it is a horrible odor that permeates the area. Because it is a lot of liquid pig shite concentrated in one area, and liquid has a lot of surface area. At least I think it does.

The pigs never see the light of day. They're there to serve at least one purpose for me. That is to say, bacon.

Doesn't this hedge fund require a million minimum investment?

If the OP has this kind of cash laying around.......well................

They actually closed it to new money about 6 years ago. If you want in to that strategy, you have to go with their PAMM (Pure Alpha Major Markets) fund. It has about a 25% lower sharpe ratio, but they just turn up the leverage to compensate.

Farrowing house=where pigs are born.
Nursery=where pigs are weaned.
Finishing floor=where pigs are fed out.
I rented a finishing floor from a guy who quit the business but I've never heard of them as an investment. Always can learn summn.
