Do you have dial up right now? If not, stay away from satellite internet.

We do have EarthLink dialup. Constantly losing service.
What's the drawback with satellite?

If you watch any kind of streaming don't get it. One if their installation guys told me it was pretty much for old people to check their email.

Do not get it. It is terrible. Your phone internet signal is faster

I find that very hard to believe. What he will have to deal with are strict data caps and throttled internet speeds should he exceed his monthly data allocation, but if he's currently using dial up, I doubt he's using a whole lot of data in the first place.

This!
I got their internet and then suddenly AT&T became available in my area so I dropped Dish and went with them instead.

I had Dish's internet back in 2000, so I'm sure it's better now than it was then. It was awful then, barely worked.
I would not consider satellite unless you have no other options.

any kind of satellite internet service is going to have high latency because of the means that the service is transmitting.
For TV it's OK because they only have to beam you a signal and you receive it. This is why satellite works fine for TV. Internet data is a two-way communication and you have to send data back and forth for it to display websites, etc. The distance makes the latency almost unbearable and for this reason satellite internet is almost always used as a last resort service.
Dial-up honestly might be a better option.

Sat internet is slow as shite and expensive as hell. Get a Verizon hot spot instead if you have 4G in your area.

Like was mentioned above get a verizon hot spot. I have a friend who just broke his contract with Dish after 5 months because it was cheaper to pay the cancellation fee and switch than it was to pay them monthly.
Once you hit your data limit they restrict the crap out of you.

This. I've had satellite internet for years. About 6 months ago I added a ATT hotspot to our family cell plan. Been much happier. Biggest negative is that you still have the data limit to deal with.

We had a mobile hotspot before U Verse became available in our area. It was beneficial when you could get a signal, but our cap was only like 2GB per month.
