Pistol for the wife (not your usual question).

Wife wants a semi-auto for her car/personal defense/plinking. She is competent with firearms and has experience shooting everything I own. We have decided on a full-size 9mm.
Problem is she has some difficulty operating the controls (mostly racking the slide) on most of what we've looked at. She has no problems operating my 1911.
We've looked at the FNS, S&W MP, and Ruger SR9 (with the SR9 being the easiest for her). The shop did not have a Glock 17/19 for her to try out.
I understand most of it will come with familiarity and experience with the particular firearm but looking for OB's suggestions on other guns to put in her hands that may be easier for her to manipulate.
ETA: ~ $500 price point.
Problem is she has some difficulty operating the controls (mostly racking the slide) on most of what we've looked at. She has no problems operating my 1911.

I have a suggestion that is related to your question but not a firearm recommendation. You may want to try a different technique for racking the slide before searching for a hardware solution. Some people who find that the slingshot method is too difficult use the overhand method instead. If you are not familiar with it, there are videos on Youtube. The basic idea is that you hold the slide stationary in an overhand grip while shoving the pistol forward with your strong hand. It may be worth a shot if slide manipulation is your primary issue.

You can get small tabs put on the slide to increase leverage. I saw a guy on Son Of Guns that had cerebral palsy get it done to a glock and it allowed him to operate the slide.

This is how I taught my wife. She holds the slide in her left hand and the grip in her right. She pushes and pulls at the same time. It absolutely works.

just kidding earlier, bought my wife the LCP 380 with the laser and she loves it. Some don't like it but for it's intended purpose it works flawlessly.

Yeah the "punch" method is what I think of it as and women typically can handle it if they think about it correctly.

Exactly how I explained it to her when we went to look. I guess it may come with familiarity and experience with the firearm, not to mention some expected break in.
I may have answered my own question in the OP, but we will check out the Glock 17/19 next. I think the simplicity of the slide, for lack of a better term (grip area maybe?), could make the technique easier to perfect. Only hang-up on the Glock is the size of the controls.

In the same position not to long ago, we went to a range that rented guns and she ended up buying a PPK 380. I actually really enjoy shooting it when we go to the range, she doesn't have any problems with it and she is more accurate with the PPK versus other guns. She also feels more confident to carry / shoot when she is alone because it is such an easy gun to operate.

Well, if you really mean full sized might try the Beretta 92 series. Slides are normally much easier to operate than most fill size pistols

Learn the right way -- it'll work on any semi-auto pistol.
