The first thing to remember about the play that cemented Leonard Fournette’s reputation as a legend-in-the-making — you know, that play, the Thanksgiving-night, Herschel Walker–channeling run at Texas A&M that set off a minor tremor throughout college football — is that his victim wasn’t some random, unwitting scrub who happened to find himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like Bill Bates before him, A&M’s Howard Matthews was an established veteran — a senior who would finish his college career with 30 consecutive starts and 258 total tackles to his credit, and was known to inflict a little pain of his own. Before he wound up flat on his back that night, Matthews was exactly where he was supposed to be. And because what happened stands as Exhibit A of Fournette’s impending conquest of the SEC, it appears Matthews is going to be there in perpetuity.

“Knowing that’s going to be around forever,” says Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, “is probably going to be harder on Howard Matthews than anybody.”

That run put Fournette over 1,000 yards for the season and gave him LSU’s freshman rushing record.

Faulk only rushed for 852 yards and 86 yards receiving. 938 total yards and 7 td's.

I thought Fournette broke the record and that Justin Vincent previously held it. I don't think Faulk held the freshman rushing record.

The best freshman performance was Justin Vincent. 6.5 ypc. Dude was an unstoppable cutback runner before he tigerland'd his career away. Next year 4.2 ypc. WOMP WOMP.

yes he did. prior to 02 or so, bowl totals weren't included in season totals.

Fournette had 1034 in 13 games including ND.

Faulk had 1086 in 11 games including the Indy Bowl vs Mich State. his bio lists the 852, but that's just the regular season. it leaves out the 234 in the bowl.

as an aside, Rohan's bowl totals aren't factored into his record setting yardage total in 01. he went for like 450 yds in the Sugar Bowl.

Didn't Fournette run over some guy at Florida also, or did he just make the guy do the stanky leg?

Ran him over and carried him into the end zone. It was a huge run.

LF7 having success with a toss dive by no means it is the optimal play call.

You fail at logic.

What about the multiple breakaway td runs by Jeremy Hill on it?
