So was LSU's defense really this bad last year?

Wake Forest is ahead of Bama, Georgia, and LSU and yet they LOST to ULM last season.

LSU has the #1 ranked overall defense in the SEC, but sucked on 3rd down. We will NOT miss John Chavis.

I can't help but notice the box that says "DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS".

Exactly how many championships has Virginia Tech won over the last three years?

Is it wrong for me to now feel depressed at the thought of us almost hiring Bob Shoop? To think what could have been...

Stats means little. Chavis had good stats but terrible defense when it counted.

The Bama moral victory of beating the eventual national champion.

So what about conversions on 1st and 2nd down?

It's not wrong to speculate, but I think Tiger fans should be happy with Steele so far. He is a big part of the recruiting momentum that LSU has right now.

3rd down killed LSU many a time while Chavis was there ; remember Alabama? Zone defense and no pass rush! Just couldn't get anyone off the field in the clutch. Thank God the Ole Miss QB was totally stupid!

Nothing is more frustrating to watch than converted third and longs.

Let's see an end to that trend.

The Miss St & Auburn game really screwed up our statistics. The defense last year was good. But I wouldn't call it elite.

This would be just as bad as what we've had. What I expect is to not know what to expect. THAT's how you play defense. The offense should never be able to guess if you're coming or from where you're coming. If you blitz consistently they'll burn you, and if you sit back in seven man zones they'll burn you.

I think it's situational, you're right, but if you're going to bring pressure, don't make it obvious where it's coming from. That was Gregg Williams' downfall in nola. It was so predictable.

All teams should have just knelt down on 1st and 2nd down last year against the ALMIGHTY Chavis

The chart in the OP uses a 3-year average, and besides, it has LSU 15th in the country in 3rd down %.
