I wanted to get my nephew comic books for his birthday. He's 6 and reading and very much into superheros. I thought it may help his interest in reading.

Any suggestions of what would be appropriate? For example, easy to follow, mild violence is ok (good guys getting bad guys), but I'd prefer to not introduce a bunch of themes like sex, death, cruelty, or complicated science theories that a child simply wouldn't understand.

Any help would be appreciated.

My 7 year old loves this series of books.

Superman, Batman, Flash...Green Lantern...it's a DC series. He also reads them for AR books for school and they are worth 1pt each.

They are not comic books so much as they are short (sub 50 pages) chapter books.

That's great, thanks.

I saw those but was not sure what they actually had inside and was looking for first hand experience.

Forget superheroes, get him some Carl Barks Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge stories. Adventure and hilarity abound, I can't recommend Uncle Scrooge's adventure comics enough.

That's good too. I had zero experience with actual comics as a kid, no particular reason, but just didn't.

There are some pictures throughout but it's a real book. The artwork looks like the Justice League cartoon era so if he's familiar with that show on Netflix he'll recognize all the guys.

The stories seem to be good and, for what it's worth, stay close to cannon because I'll hear my son say that he's familiar with a character he sees show up in a TV show or movie and he'll be talking about these books.

And Amazon has a ton of them for about $6...

If you go digital (though you can get them in print if you search for them and/or peruse a comic shop or two), Superman Adventures, Batman Adventures (and anything else based on the old Bruce Timm animated series, including Justice League) are good books. Also, can not recommend more the digital first series Batman: Lil Gotham. The best Batman book in a long time and perfect for kids. DC Comics app (thru Comixology) should have all or most of these.

My son (6) really likes the Hulk and the Agents of Smash.

One of the greatest comics ever produced.

It's all about man's attempt to confront and understand an absent God. Some might say it's heavy material for a six year-old, but there's plenty of violence and rape to keep his attention (and there's even a slapstick vampire, kids love vampires!). He might not understand the Kierkegaard-esque undertones, but he'll be entertained none the less.

My son who is 6 also love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Adventures book. Sadly, they can't just pick up the main Marvel or DC titles like we used to as kids because of the adult content now.

But, both DC and Marvel do make an entire line of kid friendly books also. Marvel has books called Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-man, Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble and Marvel Universe Guardians of the Galaxy. DC has Batman Adventures, Scooby Doo, Teen Titans Go and Looney Tunes. I believe those are the current books available in the latest Diamond previews. IDW also offers books like the aforementioned TMNT, Angry Birds, My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, Samurai Jack and Skylanders to name a few.
