Would like to buy my dad a decent spinning reel and rod for Christmas. Would be used mostly for specs/reds. Would like to stay around $150 total.

Just so many options out there, would appreciate the advice.

If you tryna spend 300 on the combo I'd look at a G Loomis greenwater for the rod and just put a Sahara on it.

More rod goes a lot further than more reel when you're talking these prices

ETA that'll put you over 300, but in general, I'd probably just get the sahara and spend the extra on the rod

$150 total? Mid line Shimano with a Triumph rod. Triumph's are St. Croix rods made overseas instead of USA. Same quality at a cheaper price.

$150 total.... That Penn looked pretty decent as well as a shimano saraha or Symetre.

I just reread and realize i'm an idiot.

For 150, I'd get a sahara and a Falcon Coastal. Or sedona if needs to be a little less.

Whatever rod you get, I'd suggest a 7' medium/fast.

And have them put some 30# power pro braid on it. (with mono backing)

I bought my daughter a Shimano Stradic, and a St Croix rod.

Don't you love him?
