I'm bored as shite, want to go walk around the woods in a certain WMA. Haven't been hunting at all since before I joined the Army 5 years ago. Certain things I need to know:
Deer isn't open in the WMA I'm going to. What are the blaze orange requirements?
Is a .22 my best bet?
Any and all pointers would be appreciated. Even if I don't take anything home, it'll still be a good time. Most importantly, I want everything I'm doing to be completely legal.

If you're a good shot with a .22 and have a scope on it you'll probably be just as well off as with a shotgun. The range you gain should offset the loss in shooting through leaves. Shotguns are certainly more forgiving tho.
Biggest thing I'd say is to try and find a place that's either hard to get to or looks like it would be overlooked. Lots of people hunt the WMA's and if you're in an easy to access area the squirrels will be wary, few and far between.
Also, mature trees with little undergrowth may seem like ideal habitat but it really makes sneaking up on squirrels harder. If you can find an area with some undergrowth it will be easier to get within range.

wear as much orange as possible.
watch out for water moccasins.
bring a map of the wma and a compass/gps.
go deep, since the readily accessible areas will be lacking tree rats..easy pickings for season openers.
g'luck

Would be quite a challenge. Especially for a feller in blaze orange and a .22. I would wait for it to lay, use a shotgun and forgo the orange if it's not deer season and/or required. Squirrels can see like a sumbitch. Later in the year when the leaves are gone I would bring the .22.

Too windy to squirrel hunt. Wander around w .22 and hope to see a pig.
