re: Charles Barkley: ‘Unintelligent’ Blacks ‘Brainwashed’ to reject success

I asked about "blackness" in response to this statement and because I'm fortunate enough to live in a very nice neighborhood. We have many black families in there and see most of them out doing their lawn walking their dogs, etc.
I'm not sure I've witnessed them doing anything "black." They just do the things normal people do. When dude is out cutting his grass, one hand isn't holding up his pants. When he walks his dog, it isn't some fight marred up pit bull, it's a little furry yapper that would sit on your Aunt Martha's tit at Thanksgiving. Although his wife does drive a Cadillac, it's not sporting 28" rims or blaring rap music. His beverage of choice after cutting said grass seems to be Miller Lite, not Colt 45.
If "most black folk only care about the Blackness of themselves" and none of the blacks in my neighborhood are doing what Sir Charles explained; WTH is "blackness?"
Don't get caught up in the stereotype about black people. It's all about education. It's about teaching and raising your children to know right from wrong and how to get an education to get ahead in life. I don't look at whites who live in trailer homes and run meth labs or screw their sisters and think that all white people are like that. I think there is a small percentage of white people that are like that but I'm not surprised when I see white people out cutting their grass and walking their dogs. A small percentage of black people do fit the stereotypes you mentioned. However, it is a small percentage. Unfortunately, a large percentage of white people in America seem to believe that is the norm. Reading your comments just seemed to scream "wow, there are black people that are just regular normal people."

It's not a small percentage
I know plenty of decent smart hard working black people
But there are big populations of ghetto arse black people in every city in America
Sorry for seeing this with my eyes.

This reminds me of Bill O'Reilly. Do you remember when he had dinner with Al Sharpton at a Harlem restaurant?
quote:
After eating dinner at a famed Harlem restaurant recently, Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly told a radio audience he "couldn't get over the fact" that there was no difference between the black-run Sylvia's and other restaurants.
"It was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun," he said. "And there wasn't any kind of craziness at all."
O'Reilly said his fellow patrons were tremendously respectful as he ate dinner with civil rights activist Al Sharpton. . . . . .
He said he treated Sharpton to dinner to thank him for appearing on his Fox News Channel show.
O'Reilly pointed to the lack of difference between Sylvia's and other restaurants as a marker of racial progress. He also noted that he went to an Anita Baker concert recently where the audience was evenly mixed between blacks and whites.
"The band was excellent, but they were dressed in tuxedoes, and this is what white America doesn't know, particularly people who don't have a lot of interaction with black Americans," he said. "They think the culture is dominated by Twista, Ludacris and Snoop Dogg."
Williams concurred that too many people believe there's little else in black culture beyond profane rap.
"That's right," O'Reilly said. "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M.F.-er, I want more iced tea."
Sharpton said he was taken aback that anyone would be surprised at how blacks acted at Sylvia's and will ask O'Reilly on The O'Reilly Factor Wednesday to explain what he meant.

....and there are larger populations of black people that are just the opposite. You are seeing it with your eyes and not using your head at all. I see with my eyes a lot of poor whites living in trailers but my common sense tells me that there are far more that don't.

Just look at some statistics man. I'm not denying white trash. To say it's exactly the same is willfully ignorant.

To say it's exactly the same is willfully ignorant. But that's not what I'm saying. Damn man, it's like you have a hard time believing that there are more blacks that don't fit the stereotype.

What? I never said that. I don't what you're arguing against.

Hey Genro, add to your list; Pull your pants up.

Clearly this Charles Barkley guy does not have enough experience with black people.
As several posters will be in here shortly to say "they never see anything like this so it must not exist".
RDRGeaux09 is one that comes to mind.
bigpetedatiga is another.

Sir, I rarely agree with you on anything but this comment of yours is straight on. Problem could be that there just aren't enough good stable families to get that mind set entrenched. In any case here is to things getting better for all.

I think you know the stats on this scenario. You've got roughly 70% influencing the narrative you see on this board. And that's not even factoring in the "down low" in the black community. Is it unreasonable to say the "nuclear family" in the black community is probably south of 20%?

There needs to be more prominent black men of stature to come out and support this kind of message. The "thug" mentality is destroying the black community.
There is.

Although I live in a fairly mixed area, I work in a predominantly black area and sorry sir, there are MUCH more that act as the "stereotype" I pointed out than those that act the "norm."
I'd like to think my POV isn't skewed one way or the other, I call it like I see it.
I wish it were different because blacks overwhelmingly are their own worst enemy but it's easier to blame whitey or "the man" than take responsibility for their own communities.

I have nothing to add, other than I think it's the saddest cultural/anthropological fact that I have heard in a very very long time.
I would like to think that folks from such an insular cultural group would help each other and try to lift each other up.

Those that do Champagne, are vilified. That little forum Hannity held with Dr Carson and other black conservatives gives me hope though that the message will eventually get out.
