quote:

While appearing on “Afternoons with Anthony Gargano and Rob Ellis,” Barkley was asked about a rumor that Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson was getting criticism from his black teammates for not being, quote, “black enough.”

Barkley went on a long monologue on the subject: ”Unfortunately, as I tell my white friends, we as black people, we’re never going to be successful, not because of you white people, but because of other black people. When you’re black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other black people. It’s a dirty, dark secret; I’m glad it’s coming out.”

Barkley said that young black men who do well in school are accused of “acting white” by their peers. “One of the reasons we’re never going to be successful as a whole, because of other black people. And for some reason we are brainwashed to think, if you’re not a thug or an idiot, you’re not black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent, and don’t break the law, you’re not a good black person. And it’s a dirty, dark secret.”

“There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success,” he continued. “It’s best to knock a successful black person down because they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful…”

“We’re the only ethnic group who say, ‘Hey, if you go to jail, it gives you street cred.’ It’s just typical BS that goes on when you’re black, man.”

He makes some good points. Can you image the outrage if a white teammate said "he is to black to play quarterback"

Why is it that black people are so consumed with someone's blackness? MLK -"content of character not color of skin". Shouldn't Wilson judged by his play on the field?

There needs to be more prominent black men of stature to come out and support this kind of message. The "thug" mentality is destroying the black community.

All groups do this/have done this. Sons of British coal miners who wanted to go to college got grief from their parents and peers (there is a good Monty Python skit about this).

And I think this phenomenon as a "black" thing is overstated a little. White successful kids are picked on as nerds (though that seems less so now-a-days).

That said, there does seem to be some truth there. As an optimist, I just assume that one day this will be less of an issue.

Even though he's a Democrat, I would vote for CB for President. But only if he was that candid in his speeches and news conferences.

"Why is it that black people are so consumed with someone's blackness?"

Funny, though, because just a small handful of generations ago, roughly similar attitudes were common among Southern whites, especially lower-middle class Southern whites. The expression "puttin' on airs" probably captures it best. H

I'm gonna distribute flyers in the ghetto

How to get out of the ghetto and have a better life:
Start reading books
Work on speaking better. Make a habit of sounding out each word clearly.
Don't listen to those who make fun of you, you're making your life better
Look for a job, if this fails, knock on doors and ask around for odd jobs and save all the money you can
Don't listen to those who make fun and call you white - there are plenty of black people on the other side who won't do that
When you have saved enough money, get an education - GED or community college or technical school
Keep ignoring those who make fun of you. You are making your life better, they are living in shite.
Do not break the law - do not steal, kill, rape, sell drugs, or get in fights. Try to be honest.
Find your new friends in those who work and go to school and are focused on improving their life
Keep ignoring those who make fun of you
When you have your degree, get a job in that field
Once you have your job and have saved enough money from it, get an apartment away from ghetto
Forget about those who made fun of you
Keep moving forward.

Wouldn't that be a case of someone representing themselves as something they are not? Wilson is not "putting on airs", he is just being himself......it's his team mate who has the problem that Wilson is not the "type" of person he "wants" him to be..

He was a Republican at one time - sounds like he's rethinking the switch. His statement is wholly inconsistent with current Democrat party policies on race.

I worked at an all black school for a while and one of the older black teachers used to say the same thing.

He called it the "crawfish syndome". Basically whenever one tries to escape the boiling water another 3 are right there to pull them back down.

Black folks who succumb to sort of peer pressure are weak, but kids who are raised in a good stable families, have too much self-confidence instilled in them by their parents to fall for this crap.

Only a small percentage ignorant Black folks care about other people's Blackness, while most Black folks only care about the Blackness of themselves and their kids.
