But Tree of Life is the most pretentious and likely the worst film ever made
I've never seen Tree of Life but "worst film ever made" gets tossed around so freely on this board that you kinda made me want to see it just so I can see how overly dramatic you're being

Crash isn't pretentious, it's manipulative.

I don't know why Singles lasts...but I know why Reality Bites doesn't last...it's too much in the present and tries too hard to remain forever in the present.
Singles is very much in the present in the 90's but it has a kind of comedic reverence for pop culture in general.
I thought at the time that Singles was a much better movie.

I thought this movie was very funny at times so I liked it, but I don't think that was what they were going for

I'm sorry to derail your thread further, but this is a very poor definition of pretentious. It's more like a possible affect of being pretentious.
Here's a dictionary definition of pretentious:

pre·ten·tious

adjective
adjective: pretentious
attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
And yes, you do somewhat come across as pretentious.

Being John Malkovich. Loved it in college. Hated it a few months ago when I tried watching it again.

Does it count if you hated it the first time you watched it? If so, then The Big Chill.

I really get into movies like Crash and Parenthood that follow around a bunch of different characters. But, even though I haven't seen it in awhile, I bet I'd find Grand Canyon would fall into the pretentious category. I loved it as a teen.

At the risk of going all poli-board on the topic (even though I never go to that board), any movie that preaches the liberal, morally-superior dogma qualifies (Crash, Avatar, etc)
On the TV side of the house - every episode of any Sorkin series.

i re-watched 'the royal tenenbaums' not long ago with two friends who hadn't seen it before. both of 'em griped over how pretentious it came off, and i couldn't really argue against it....about 2/3 through the movie, i was thinking "i actually once liked this??
i'll add a few more (ducking tomatoes in advance)....'clerks', 'the english patient', 'avatar', and ____________ (insert tarantino film).

Without getting into definitional issues of the word pretentious, The Big Chill is a good choice to meet the criteria.
The best thing about it was the sound track, but Baby Boomers were quite full of themselves.

Big Chill is tops.
That was the height of when the Baby Boomers were in love with themselves.
Still think Gen X - Big Chill - is Reality Bites.

I thought about Clerks, but I then decided it really wasn't "pretentious", it is still funny and was done on such a cheap budget that it could hardly fit into this category.
However, Chasing Amy is a movie I once liked but in retrospect seems sort of pretentious. Maybe because it tries to be serious and philosophical about love but is just sophomoric, or maybe because Ben Affleck became pretentious and therefore the movie is now ruined.
