Does anyone know if Comcast honors QoS tagging? Do their SMC modems? I don't see any QoS options in the SMC, so I'm guessing there's nothing there...but if I get a router that's QoS capable, and get the public IP on it, can I help out this VoIP system? Or will Comcast just disregard QoS tagging?

We just did this for a client on Uverse. They have a third party, cloud based VoIP phone system that was having really bad call quality issues. Their vendor recommended changing out the Cisco RVS4000 with a Sonicwall and they provisioned the QoS. Big difference.

You would think it would work if you bring in the public IP from the modem to the router with QoS. You're bringing in the same bandwidth but then determining how it's used once it hits the internal network. I haven't messed with Comcast much though. We have Cox here and their VoIP offering is pretty solid. They segregate the data and voice channels when they set it up so there's no interference from each other. I've been recommending that to a lot of our clients, not to mention we get paid pretty nice referral fees.

If they do honor the QoS markings, you should re-mark all of your traffic.

If they don't honor the QoS markings, it is probably because some a-hole re-marked all of his traffic and got it taken away for everyone.
