Went out this weekend and the recreational capt I fish with has started targeting these guys. You catch them at about 1000ft of water. We fished them for about 4 hrs and caught 6 fish weighing about 15-25bs. It made the trip because we lost 3 YF at the boat and only had a few dolphin, BF, and one wahoo to show to that point. Anyone fish these on the regular? Meat looks very good. I'm going to pan sear and the broil these evening.

Yes, their meat is similar to grouper. Thier common name here is "barrel grouper".

I've never fished them though.

One cut leader as we grabbed it. One the guy gaffed it but dropped the gaff and the line broke. The other really wasn't at the boat but the guy tightened the drag too much and it snapped.

Beautiful rip out there.

How lite a leader were you using? To snap the line on a tired yellow had to have a nick in the line. We've tightened drags on tired yf up to 45 lbs of drag and didn't have a problem.

The one gaffed was probably in the 30-40lb range. The one the leader broke was easily 80+lbs. Very nice fish. I was sick. We used 60lb leader. I think someone snuck bananas on the boat.

So it tasted great. I am really hooked. It kinda has almost a swordfish or lobster type texture to it.

Caught them on the bottom about 400m off the rig in 1100ft of water.
