To soak the beans or not to soak the beans

Should the beans be soaked overnight for boiling the following day?

I soak..... not overnight.
cuts down on cook time.

I soak most of the time; overnight when i remember, or just a few hours. you can also do a 1 hour quick simmer to get them tender before adding them to the pot with the rest of your ingredients.

This. Normally, if I get a hankering to cook some beans, I'll put them soaking in the morning to cook them later that day for dinner.

Boil in water for five-ten minutes, cover the pot, and let the beans sit in the pot covered for an hour, it achieves the same end. Go heavy on the amount of water used, the beans are going to expand greatly in that time, and the excess can be poured out.
I used to soak. Now I do a "first Boil" for about 30 minutes till they start to open and softern. Then I drain and rinse in a collander. Come out perfect everytime. Learned that trick at a white bean cook off. The winning teams all did it.

Camellia--the folks who really know their beans--doesn't call for soaking in any of their recipes. I've been skipping that step for years with no ill effects.
Yep. Soaking is unnecessary. I usually bring the beans to a boil and cut off the fire and let them sit for an hour and then start the cooking. I've also skipped this step and the beans still cooked just fine.

I soak if I remember to but not always and I cannot tell the difference between the two except cook time.

I do. It's like Brining - the bean will be infused with the flavors that you add.
