Anyone ever made a coonskin cap?

Have any of ya'll ever tried to make a coonskin cap? We have some raccoons that have been terrorizing our townhome complex and I've been trapping them. Usually I just shoot them and throw them in the canal but I've been thinking it would be cool as hell to make a genuine coonskin cap (Davey Crockett style). I don't even know where to start though.
Any advice?

I'm not even sure how to skin it to preserve the pelt. I've cleaned 1000's of squirrels and rabbits but never gave 2 shits about the hide.

Skinning coons is easy until you get to the face. You hang them up from a gambel. We made one with dog choker chains because the ones with hooks will mess up the hide. You circle the back feet and skin down to the vent like a deer, cut around the vent and around the base of the tail. You'll need a tail stripper to keep the tail in tact. You strip the tail and then just work down the body pulling the hide off like a sock. When you get to the front legs you cut around the legs for a bit and then make a circle around the front paws. The way I do it is that I just pull the hide off the legs from there using my thumb hooked into the hide while I'm pulling at the elbow. It turns the front leg inside out. Now the tricky place is the ears and eyes. You have to be very careful and cut slowly until you get the hang of it. The first beaver I ever skinned you could put your fist through the eye hole when I was done. If you wanna do it right, its easier to learn with someone showing you than reading on the internet. Tanning it is something I've never tried though.

Thanks man. Seems like it'll be a much harder project than I thought. Looks like I'll just continue throwing them in the canal.

I once saw a coon's arse mounted on the wall of a camp. Loved it.
I hear they're very tasty on the pit if you cut the glands out. Anyone ever tried?

Very good. Boil it for 30 min crab boil. Then bake at 350 in the oven until it gets tender. Bake it with sweet taters and all your other favorite veggies.

Three kinds of coons.
City coons. These get in your trash and eat folks' catfood. I'd never eat one.
Swamp coons. These taste like fish. I'll eat em if I'm really hungry, but prefer nutria over swamp coons.
Hardwood/pineywoods coons. Acorn eaters that frequent your feeders. I eat the shite out of em, except for the big ol bores.
I think there's another kind, but I'm not gonna try to eat one.
