If six (6) LSU players declare for the NFL draft does that not allow LSU to sign more players to reach the 85 limit on scholarships? How does that work, please explain, and thanks in advance.

Not necessarily. It's a part of natural attrition. If you handed out 25 scholarships every season and nobody left early you would be way over the 85 scholarship limit.

I think the answer is yes.

Correct. The answer is yes that does not allow us to sign more players.

Yeah.. because it's not that we'll be making up room for the players that declare early, we'll actually be diminishing the room we have available for future recruits.

Well shite, I will ask it another way. If LSU has 53 players on scholarship after 6 players declare for the NFL draft would they not be allowed to sign 32 on national signing day? That would equal 85 on Scholly.

It gives us more room in terms of the 85 player scholarship limit, but it does not allow us to sign more players per class than the SEC currently allows (28, I think).
The only ways to get around the 28 per class limit is to backsign (count early enrollees as part of the previous class) or greyshirt (have players wait to be part of the team until Spring so they'll count against next year's class).

And we signed what.. 23 last year? We have 25 currently committed.. we could take an even 30 with EEs I think.

The yearly signing limit is a hard and fast 25 no more no less.
HOWEVER, if you have some recruits that can qualify as early entrants (graduate HS early and start college in january) you can "back count" those guys to your previous years class if you have room under the 25.
For instance, last year LSU only signed 23 leaving 2 spots for this years EE's. In addition I think at least two of the signees didn't actually make to campus for various reasons, so their spots are available as well.
What that means in hard numbers is, this year LSU can sign as many as 29 players. The 25 allowed for 2013, and 4 EE's that can be counted back to 2012.
I think I got all that right.

and does this (2012) season count as their first (? redshirt)year, meaning that as of the TCU game, they have 4 to play 4?

I assume you are asking about the guys who are back counted, like Avery Johnson this year and the answer is that they have 5 to play 4 just like any other freshman unless they are a JUCO guy like Fanika this year.

Everyone else did a great job explianing it but just to contribute, the answer is no. We have 29 spots available on the surface but in reality we don't have 29 open spots under the 85. What that means is that the staff has taken commitments from kids with the thought in mind that these 6 kids were leaving early and that some others on the roster are gonna either give up football, go on medical or just transfer. I think we had 10 scholarship srs meaning, just based on pure numbers under 85, that we only have about 12 spots open(we were under 85 all year) open. Now wth the early NFL guys that opens up another 5-6 spots. We technically still need another 6-9 spots to fit everyone in depending on the fianl qualifying number. So in short we're still over 85 based on the roster and the current commitments.
83(I think is the current roster number)
Subtract 10 seniors=73
Subtract 6 early NFL guys=67
Add 27(which is the reported target number) =94
That means we need 9 kids gone give or take based on the actual current number on the roster. That means some kids we don't want to lose are gonna be gone.
Some candidates
Ford-may leave early
Jerrard Randall-transfer
Jarrett Fobbs-transfer
Armand Williams-transfer
Nic Jocobs-likely gone
Evan Washington-falling down the depth chart;transfer
Muncie
Welter
Logan-may leave early
Thaose are the best case scenario of transfers. Likely a couple of kids we hope stay are gone.
