One of the greats

Take Five (1966)
quote:
Jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck, whose pioneering style in pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms, has died. He was 91.
Brubeck died Wednesday morning of heart failure after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius, said his manager Russell Gloyd.
Brubeck would have turned 92 on Thursday. Brubeck had a career that spanned almost all American jazz since World War II. He formed The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 and was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine - on Nov. 8, 1954 - and he helped define the swinging, smoky rhythms of 1950s and '60s club jazz.

DAMN, one of my favorites. I guess Gene Wright is the sole survivor now ?

A great musician indeed. Got to see him at NO Jazz Fest in 2004 I believe. His live release featuring the Quartet at Carnegie Hall is fantastic. It concludes with spectacular versions of Blue Rondo and Take Five.

Dang, I had no idea he was still living.
Crazy to think he outlived Paul Desmond by like half his life

My 15 y/o son's take on Take Five. RIP Dave Brubeck!
Ironically, today we've also lost the world's oldest person (116 y/o woman from Georgia) and the world's tallest woman (7' 7" Chinese gal).

Brubeck did another nice version (SWIDT?) in the early 70s
Unfortunately it's not on YouTube
The Nice also did a nice (ugh) version of "America" from West Side Story

Drinking whiskey, reading Calvin and Hobbes and listening to Take Five. There couldn't be a better end of the day in my mind.
