i said this a few weeks ago. if he can play the role of 6th man he played late last year but at the level (or above) that he's playing right now, then that's an amazing upgrade for the team. and i'd be extremely happy with that.

I like him off the bench right now. But Smiht might develop further. I wrote AFA off 3-4 weeks ago and thought he would never do anything. Then he started to come around.

I also want to see how these guys develop with Monty since there won't be a lockout. I think that really hurt teams like the Hornets at the beginning of the season since we had so few players returning. The team played much better ball at the end of the season.

There will likely be very few trade options for Okafor where you take no money back, so if you need immediate cap space you would amnesty him. It'd have to be for signing a max or near max level player like CP3 or Josh Smith though.

You'd be cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Kaman isn't going anywhere. In fact Dell Demps would have to leave before Kaman leaves. Kaman is the unofficial fan favorite

Kind of like Thornton was the fan favorite?

Disagree a little with this. To me, Smith is a "pick and pop" PF. I can't think of too many true 5's in the league that do this - it's mainly 4's. Plus, I don't recall seeing Smith posting up and scoring off the block like Kaman can do w/ both hands. Plus, Smith doesn't hold up too well against larger (bulk) 5's. (I realize if he bulks up, that might change, but that's an unknown at this point.) Now I have no prob. Smith playing backup 4 and 5, I just don't see him as a true starting 5.

To the OP, I don't see how we would not have EITHER Kaman or Oak on the roster next year (w/o drafting Drummond - and I would HATE that move).

If we're lucking enough to get Davis or T. Rob, I think Landry is gone due to $ reasons, but I'd much rather have Landry than Ayon. If that's the case I see the roster as:

Jack/Vasquez
Gordon/Belli/Henry
Aminu/Henry
Davis or T. Rob/Landry
Kaman or Oak/Smith

We prob. go PG or SF w/ Minn pick. I really like Ariza and would hate to lose him, but no way we keep him, Landry, and Kaman.

My preferred roster would be:

JJ/Vasquez
Gordon/Belli/Henry

Ariza/Aminu/Henry (if I have to chose out of Ariza and Landry, I choose Ariza)

Davis or T. Rob/Ayon
Kaman/Smith

I don't know if you clicked the link and read what OOP said, but Kaman leaving would be because he doesn't want to stay after we tried to trade him and the amnesty of Okafor was an "it's possible" answer, not "we're actively considering this". I doubt they'd do it to clear space for signing a guy like Dragic, trading for someone like Howard or signing DWill they'd probably think about it.

I think players get butt hurt pretty easily when they think you don't want them, so until we draft Landry's replacement the position of the organization should be we want Landry to retire a Hornet.

Dude, Kaman is a pick and pop 5.... He's something of a turnover machine in traffic under the basket.

Not when you factor in contracts. Ayon is a MUCH better value than Landry for what they provide.

Jesus I'm so sick of hearing people say "___would be perfect playing the 6th man"

how many of those can we have? cause people seem to think Smith, Ayon, and Landry should all play it. Why not give one of these guys a chance at starting on a team (that's not full of D-leaguers)?

PS this wasn't directed at just you quail man

How does Landry fit with Smith, Ayon, lotto pick?

he doesn't...but it's not set in stone that we are drafting a PF. the team may be more interested in a SF or a C.

I hope and think that Smith will be starting at PF next season...also hope we keep Landry as sixth man

...but this is the role he is suited for, and he likes that role.

What is Smith's ceiling? I can't look at him and say he has any physical flaws holding him back, like Aminu and coordination. Is there any reason to think Smith can't increase his strength and skill enough to be a starter?

Smith made a huge jump this season. He is stronger, jumping higher, blocking more shots. He still is pretty consistent at that mid range jumper. He's got great energy. He's rebounding better too. I'm not expecting this big of a jump in improvement for next season, but apparently he's working hard. He will improve, and I love that he is a 7' PF.

I'm hoping he can be a 14 and 8 or 9 rebound starter, with an above average backup in Landry.

Better value, but has no low post game. His only move is reverse layup. & yes, Kaman can pick & pop, but he doesn't usually go set the ball screen up top, but floats baseline after guard penetration. So he's really just the "pop" w/I the "pick". Plus he gets fed down in post way more than Smith & there is a reason for that. He's got low post game - Smith, not so much. & don't misunderstand, I really like Smith & think he's the best value on the team

With Ayon's contract, he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. We got a huge steal with him. Very very affordable.

Yeah I dont think amnestying Okafor right now makes sense. He's obviously a bad contract but he isn't worthless. What are you going to be replaying him with that's so much better? I think this offseason will be about continuing to build a foundation, mostly though these 2 first round picks and low cost role guys who fit into our plans. Then once we have a little more of our team set we can cut okafor next season and use that money to go out and make a serious run at a major piece who will have to overpay.
