In June, I will be relocating to TX for my first job out of college. However, I am still in my first truck that I bought in high school and it's barely running. I was thinking about purchasing a dependable vehicle before I moved but then I realized I would be hit with fees/taxes in LA and then TX a couple months later.

Can anyone explain the process to me? Is there a way to register it in TX without a physical address to avoid being hit twice? I figured at least a few of you gentlemen have come across a similar scenario...

I believe there's no way to avoid paying taxes here then having to register it in Texas other than buying the vehicle in Texas once you get your address. You have to if you ever plan to have it registered in Texas.

If you can hold off, buy in Texas. The sales tax is cheaper and you wont have to go through the process of new registration and sending your LA plates back. The Texas DPS website should answer your questions. You will have to get a Texas inspection sticker before you get it registered. Also, a change in insurance due to different requirements. I had to cancel my LA policy and start a new one in Texas with the same national company. Dont forget about a TX DL either. You will need your birth certificate etc. for the DL.

Your insurance savings in Tx will make up for it anyway you go.

As already mentioned....wait till you move if you can.

Be prepared for many positives. More insurance coverage for less money, less taxes. Typically an overall cheaper purchase price as well.

I have to do this for TN. Car is purchased in LA and already paid for. The car was originally in my father's name but he signed it over to me.

I have been needing to register it in TN for a few months now, but I really hate the DMV
