Having a cocktail party on Saturday night for about twenty friends. At a cocktail party, do you prefer an assortment of hors d'oeuvres or a few simple appetizers with a main course such as jambalaya, gumbo, or crawfish etouffee?

I prefer what I call "heavy cocktail foods" for a cocktail party rather than meal type foods. That's what we do for Christmas Eve.

Give me some examples of what you mean by "heavy cocktail foods".

Sliced tenderloin, beef or pork with potato rolls
Ham
Smoked turkey
Crawfish cardinale in a chafer with French toast rounds
Boiled shrimp or shrimp tossed in a sauce of some sort, cold served with toothpicks
marinated asparagus or other veggies, marinated
various canapes
various spreads/dips with crackers
roasted pecans

Basically, foods that don't need a knife or fork, though I do include soups/gumbos, which are kept warm in a soup kettle (electric) to be served by the guests themselves in cups.

Just my preference. I don't like carrying around a plate with things that require a fork to eat at a cocktail party. Finger food is my personal preference. Otherwise, it's not a cocktail party. It's a buffet or dinner to me.

Thanks, Gris Gris. Nice spread. I was planning on having tenderloin and ham with rolls, a nice cheese board, a dip (probably hot spinach/artichoke), and a shrimp/andouille gumbo. But your suggestion of cold shrimp tossed in a remoulade sauce is a great one. Thanks again.

My suggestion: first figure out how you want your guests to eat. Will everyone be standing up and chatting or is there room for folks to sit? This should drive what you will serve. If your intent is for folks to mingle and chat, then I’d go with finger food…stuff you can pick up and eat in one bite with one hand (other will be holding a plate and/or drink). If your home can accommodate a significant number of folks sitting down to eat, then go with a broader menu.

Good luck!
