I see the TV ads for these places like Capella, Southern New Hampshire University, University of Phoenix, WGU, and the rest and always assumed they were just diploma mills.

Are these degrees actually looked upon as "valid" or not really?

Just kind of talking about general areas of study like business or marketing.

Personally I’d go to a local community college and finish there lol

Not my opinion, but I've had a hiring manager tell me that he dumps applicants that have degrees from the University of Phoenix. I don't know why, maybe a bad experience with a graduate? Not sure about the others.

University of Phoenix was controversial because the course format was totally different from what was traditional, and they had not central campus.

Today many schools have adopted the Phoenix format fort their courses. Including ULL’s online MBA.

There are very few universities that don’t offer online degrees of some type, even Harvard and MIT, especially graduate programs.

All schools offer online degrees now. The value of such degrees is debatable.

If its an online grad degree in certain fields that you are doing while working in said field, yes. Not sure about undergrad. I'm sure with the covid virtual stuff there might be a shift in perception on that though.

ETA: certain fields and degrees from certain schools.

This seems like a great market to start BSU (Baw State University).

Depends on the employer and the job, but overall they are generally accepted as legit.

I got an Associates in Computer Networking from Iowa Central Community College Online. I have a Bachelor's in Accounting from ULL. All paid by the GI Bill so why not?

At my previous two jobs, any applicant that had University of Phoenix on it was an immediate toss. It didn't even matter if they would have taken minimum wage.

I dated a girl who got an online degree from Kaplan University because she literally thought it was in Kaplan, Louisiana. Special.

LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, and other big Universities are now offering online degrees. Some programs are actually cheaper than being on campus.

As someone in the higher ed industry (for now at least), they're totally fine unless you're trying to go into higher ed.

If you're in Hattiesburg and are able to work out night classes at USM, I'm sure you would get a better education there, but in terms of pure job credentials, there's not a huge difference.

Of course, it also comes down to the person. Are you going to take the degree seriously and try to get an internship in the field/side job in the field and really try to learn? Or are you doing it because it sounds "cool" and don't plan on taking it seriously?

If you’re going to get a degree online, get it from a brick and mortar. Your degree won’t say it was online.

WGU is legit. In some states, your allowed to get state aid to attend there. I know a few teachers and nurses who got their degree there.

Degrees are absolutely worthless unless it’s something specialized like engineering or medical. I learned more during my first year on the job than I did in 4 years of college.

I hire engineers. I only consider legit on-campus degrees from schools with some pedigree.

University of Phoenix

Plenty of people used their GI Bill with them and have been very successful. They used to come and speak with discharging veterans, but I’m not sure if they still do.

American Military University is another online school preferred by veterans. They are accredited by the APUS and CHEA among others.
