You know what grinds my gears? People calling cards "investments". By rule, any card from 1961 and after should never be called that.

There are exceptions. Lebron, Brady, Michael, Kobe, Trout, etc. that GM 10s but I'd argue there is only a rare subset of all their cards that will truly appreciate.

Buying packs at Walmart and stuffing crapola into cases is not an "investment". I don't care what Jamarr Chase does in his career, that's the peak his RC will ever go for. That's insane for this over produced crap nowadays.

The bubble will burst hard. There is only so much demand and you're constantly churning product, all buyers will soon exhaust and the bottom will drop. Just how it is. I lived the 90s and early 00s pre Lebron. I seent it.

In fact, I can tell you the product that started the tank in the 90s: Topps Finest. Discuss.

If you truly own that card, you should unload it now. That price is fueled by speculation and maintains 10 years out for nothing less than a Bradyesque career.

I do truly own that card. I also truly know about sports cards. That same card with Mahomes on it, is worth over half a million. I’m also the worst type of “investor” with this type of card. I’m emotionally invested in Joe Burrow.

That said, there’s also many significant differences taken into account with current cards vs. even Brady cards. LeBron, Brady, Kobe, etc. don’t have near the “cost of obtaining” as someone like Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, LaMelo Ball, etc. I don’t know how else to describe it.

The other thing about the OP, is that specific card. Select XRC in football is generally thought of as the “first true RC” of the first round draft picks. That card is far from common. Despite JaMarr Chase being a 2021 rookie, that card was only available in 2020 Select Hobby boxes as a redemption based of certain draft picks. Far from a “Wal-Mart shelf card.”

Jerry Koosman's mother collected over 1,000 of her son's rookie cards from 1968, that was a hell of an investment.

Missed his 1/1 RPA auction that only went for $140

Are they making too many cards, and therefore screwing the customer again.

I had 1992 Shaq & Alonzo Mourning shiny silver Classic insert cards when they originally came out. The Shaq card value got up to $120 in the first couple of years. It may have been worth $25 ten years later. I had a huge collection of Fleer Ultra basketball too. I was always lucky getting cards in packs or non-whole boxes. I got the Classic inserts by buying two of these boxes.

I got an acetate Manon Rheaume Classic four sport card that was numbered, in one of the two boxes, also.

There are always ebbs and flows to any collectible market. People think there will be a collective "burst" when in reality, it will be a very slow decline for some period and then a uptick back. There has already been a slow decline, but it's steadily rising again.
Are the 90's cards regaining some of the value they lost? Basketball was where the money was in the 90's, but four or five companies saw people buying, and started pumping out cards. They put too many of the inserts in packs. People like me thought they were lucky, but every guy out there was getting a bunch of the inserts too. Like I said before, my cards that were worth $120 dropped to $25, or worse. Is Beckett good for pricing? If not, where can one find values?

Late 80s-90s cards are still a pretty low point, but Shaq rookies are still worth a pretty penny. I buy them whenever I can get a deal.

eBay is definitely the best play to gauge pricing

The golden goose of modern day sports cards. Likely would've happened anyway(Jordan)but this card started it all. Definitely the GOAT modern day. Will never forget buying all Walmart had back then. Had 9 at one time before grading. Now 1 with no grade but still cherished.
