Hunting/Fishing Close Calls

I'm currently listening to Meateater's Campfire Stories. It's mostly close calls and near death experiences while out hunting/fishing/etc. I figure there are probably some good stories from folks on this board. What y'all got?
In my early 20s I thought I was invincible and never wore a safety harness. I'd usually climb with spurs and was able to whip the chain of my lock on around the tree without a lineman's belt. Pretty damn reckless. I'd left my stand in a tree one evening. I stayed up late drinking which caused me to be late getting to the woods the next morning. I was in a rush so I climbed up and got about 20 ft up and looked over to realize my stand was in the tree next to the one I'd climbed. I started down the tree and at about 15 ft my spurs cut out. It felt like i'd been hit by a truck when I hit the ground. Luckily the tree was on a pretty steep slope so I rolled instead of pancaking. I laid on the ground out of breath for what felt like an hour, slowly starting to move my legs/arms. Wasn't hurt, was able to get up and get in my stand. The whole morning was a comedy of errors.

I backed my 4-wheeler off my nissan frontier without the ramps about 20 years ago at Bayou Cocodrie NWR. Scared the living shite out of me.

A guy I used to hunt with told me a story of when he took his 2 young sons hunting they where 8 and 10 at the time. He put the two boys in the tower blind along with the gun. He said he then walked out to the feeder to check it and make sure it was going to go off at day light. He said it was at that moment that the gun went off inside the stand. He said it was the worst feeling he has ever felt in his life for around 30 seconds or so but he said it felt like forever until he could get his boys to answer him as he was running back to the stand. The oldest ended up moving the gun and it went off and shot a hole in the roof of the stand.
He shared that story with me as i was introducing my kids to hunting and the importance of hunting and firearm safety.

Lightning strikes, broken tree stands and spending hours in the dark clinging to a yellow poplar, meth heads waiting at the truck, flipped 4 wheelers, sitting down in the dark 2' from a coiled timber rattler, sinking airboats in the marsh, or nearly getting head blown off rabbit hunting. What do you want to hear?

I once towed my boat several miles with the coupler not all the way down on the receiver. The chains were attached, but somehow they weren’t needed. Somehow the coupler was still sitting halfway on top of the ball when I stopped for gas. I turned as white as a ghost when I noticed.
And on more than one occasion I solo launched the boat without the plug. After parking the truck, I walked back to the boat half full of water.
ETA: One of those occasions was in the middle of winter. I stripped down and jumped into 45 degree water to put the plug in the boat. Luckily I had a towel on board. I dried off, cranked on the bilge pump, and walked back to my truck and cranked the heat.

I've done this more times than I like to admit.
On my wife and I's second date I took her fishing. Launched the boat without the plug. Parked, got back to the boat, and realized it was filling with water. Cranked up and took off to drain it. Left her on the pier holding a life jacket. She thought I'd left her on the pier to be a jackass. I remember looking back and she had her arms up in a "wtf" type of look.

Pretty sure I’d have packed them up and went home after that.

We were hiking one of the collegiate peaks 14'ers (Yale, if I remember right) and didn't get quite to the top before the afternoon thunderstorms started blowing up. I was a couple hundred yards from the top when the lightning started popping but I wasn't going back down without touching the marker to claim it. a buddy of mine has his hair stand up from the static and passed me going down in a sprint.

Close calls offshore fishing. Bad weather, taking on water, etc.. That weather moves in fast!

I fell in 2011 when my stick ladder strap broke. There was a whole thread on it. I still have the nasty picture from my leg being ripped open. 2 surgeries and a skin graft later I’m still climbing in trees.

Flipped my big red going down a 3’ hill. Had my rifle slung over my neck. Not too bad, but scared the shite out of me.
Can’t think of anything I did worse than that at the moment.

This has been my biggest irrational hunting fear for years, getting out the stand and heading back after an evening hunt

Had a crew of tree planters gathered up telling them how to plant hardwood seedlings. Farm owners foreman rides up , its deer season, flips his rifle around in his gun rack so rifle is pointing a safe direction, rifle discharges away from the crowd. Could’ve been bad.

I get pretty spooked in the dark woods as well. I remind myself all the time that there ain't anything in the woods at night that wouldn't be there during the day. Now I get pretty spooked in the woods during the day, too.
