Isla Verde looks like a good option for beaches and close to old San Juan.

Luquillo is close to the national forest and ferry to islands.

Dorado also looks nice and close to Old San Juan.

Any other area worthwhile? We plan to stay in an Airbnb.

We did plan top stay on Culebra Island for 3-4 nights. That's certain.

Is Uber reliable? Or spotty? Shall a car/ scooter be rented?

TIA.

Condado area is cool. It is the nicest, has a beach, has casinos, and if you go into the interior there is a killer market. Eat a meat pie with hot sauce for me.

Went to Culebra in June. Flew into San Juan first night. Ubered back to airport and flew Cape Air to Culebra. Beautiful beaches at Flamenco Beach. Took a day trip to Culebrita mid week. Only about 20 people on the entire island. Best beach I’ve ever been on or perhaps second best behind Bahamas. Great reef for diving and snorkeling. Drove everywhere we needed to go on a rental golf cart. Totally laid back. Last day back to San Juan and stayed at the same Airbnb near the airport. United has direct flights from Houston.

Uber can get busy, but very reliable. Taxis are schetchy. The ferries to Culebra and Vieques are unreliable, rough, and locals get priority. One couple on their honeymoon took three days to leave the island by ferry. The flight is $150 round trip and it takes 35 minutes. The ferry is $2.50 but you might not get there.

We went to Vieques a few months ago and also heard the horror stories about the ferries. The pain was taking the hour Uber from San Juan to the ferry, but the boat ride itself couldn’t have gone smoother.

I was contemplating renting a jeep or golf cart. Did you stay near the airport in Culebra or near the ferry terminal?

Can you snorkel the reef from the beach or did you take a tour?

I appreciate the info.

A day trip to Vieques? The island looks remote.

. We stayed at Mamacita’s. It is within walking distance of the ferries. We were fine with the golf cart and parking is a lot easier than a jeep would be. There are snorkeling areas near the beach, but we went out with Culebra Divers. It was $60pp for a half day dive. They put us on some great reef out there. Mamacita’s was in a great because we were in close proximity to two grocery stores and a short walk to the bakery that serves breakfast. There is also a restaurant and bar at Mamacita’s. Everything in Culebra shuts down about 9pm.

We are looking at 1BR Airbnb's in Isla Verdes and Culebra. A car is needed in mainland but wanted to try and get away with a golf cart on the island. Can the golf cart get you from airport to the grocery and breakfast in Culebra?

I'd like to check out that island as a day trip possibly. Is there water taxi/ private boat tours?

Absolutely. It’s a small island.

There are water taxis to Culebrita. I highly recommend a day there. Search YouTube for videos.

No joke, I don't really like beans in general, but that was one of the tastiest ways I've ever had them. Wish I knew how to recreate it at home.

Spent a week on Culebra, rented a jeep and stayed in house on east side of Island. Breakfast and coffee at Pan deli is tough to beat. Several snorkeling spots right off the side of the road need no guides. Nice area back to west from flamenco beach to snorkel, just have to walk about 1/3-1/2 mile down a trail. Went with Cpt Sebastian for a day trip to Culebrita, gotta see the tide pools, incredible. Great snorkeling reef on culebrita west side between culebrita and culebra. Kids caught lobster for our grill that night. Ferry can mess up your trip., very hit or miss.
