Made a reservation for a Uhaul on July 1 for today. Showed up at 9:00 this morning to get the truck and the guy at the Uhaul place said "we haven't had any trucks in a week." Didn't apologize or anything. Just told me to call the Uhaul reservations number. Called and was on hold 40 mins before someone answered me and said I could get a truck TOMORROW in Hammond. Again, no explanation or apologies.

I give it a 20% chance this place in Hammond will have a truck. As of this afternoon, they don't have one and "aren't sure" if they will tomorrow. Nice.

Had movers lined up and everything. Plus my lease is up and landlord has cut me slack for tomorrow but I figure that will run out fast.

If you have a pending Uhaul "reservation" I would suggest having a back up plan.

They're probably all out in CA hauling people out of that hellhole.

At least you didn't pay in advance.

Right?

UHaul is terrible

I always use Penske and by chatting online they price match (or come really close) to UHaul price. And Penske actually confirms a reservation for your truck.

UHaul doesn’t guarantee you a truck or even the size you “reserve” online. A few years ago I booked a 10 foot truck a few months in advance to move a small apartment worth of stuff 16 hours. I showed up to get the truck and the UHaul guy said they only had 16 foot trucks but I would get it for the same price. He acted like he was doing me a favor, but I didn’t need or want a truck that big. I asked what is the point of “reserving” a specific truck online, and why would you not call the day before and let me know? He gave 0 fricks.

I was on the phone with Penske and had a 10 or 12 foot truck for the same price that afternoon. Won me as a customer for life and been smooth sailing ever since through multiple moves. Just fill out the form online and get a quote, get on the chat and say it’s high because UHaul quoted $X

SOP for years with these assholes. NEVER do a reservation with them.

The contract is that they have to give you a truck by the end of business if they have one. If you aren’t doing a local-only move, they will refuse to give you a truck until you threaten them.

I was on the opposite end of that once. Was moving and my friend’s truck suddenly gave out the morning of. I called Uhaul, said trey have no rentals available. On a hunch went to their website and was surprised that was able to rent one online from the same place, no problem. Went to pick it up and asked why they told me over the phone that there were no trucks available. He said that basically the website ALWAYS said “yes”, even if there was nothing available, and that he did have the truck but that there was another person who had reserved it over the phone previously. Since I had a reservation and showed up first he had to give it to me. Said that it happened all the time and that it led to a lot of pissed off customers. This was about 15 years ago, don’t know if it’s still as bad as that.

Nothing new for u-haul. It’s happened to me numerous times since as early as 2003 when we were trying to move from BR to Zachary.

Depending on how much and how far you're moving, Home Depot rents trucks and trailers; Lowe's may as well.

Doesn't excuse U-Haul, but right now moving your stuff is top priority.

I rented a 6x12 trailer to help my sister in law move. When I was checking out I told the guy i was not bringing it back to that location. Went to drop it off at the location I told them I would and they charged me a hefty fee from not bringing it back to the original location. What is the point of that, people move one way right? Ended up having to make a claim and they eventually made it right but it took 2-3 weeks.

Yep, I'm picking up a truck tomorrow. They switched me from a 10 foot to a 20 foot. Should make packing easy because the 10 foot was conservative for what we need. Just moving my daughter's room to her place at college.

Back in the day I worked at a hardware store that also rented UHauls.

I was offered a job managing one of the big UHaul centers at tt that point in my life it would have been a MASSIVE leap in my income.

I politely turned it down because I know how those places operate and I couldn't stomach acting like that to people all the time.

Pretty normal for Uhaul.

Right now people are renting box trucks because car rental inventory is so screwed up. True story.

Had the same conversation with my daughter on Thursday. They had made a reservation and drove 40 minutes to the U-Haul place in Corpus Christi. Drove there and was told they didn't have any trucks and had no idea when they would. Called U-Haul and stayed on the phone forever with no results.

I'm actually moving next weekend so I just "reserved" one. Due to comments about Penske I went and checked their prices and they are asking $1,499 for a 22 foot truck for one fricking day

U haul is terrible about that. One wouldn't rent to me bc i needed a 1 way rental.

Couple years later another place screwed me on the "reservation" also. Ended up getting one the next day though.

Pro tip- go to the location on Florida near Flannery today or tomorrow before noon when people are turning them in and rent one onsite.
