Understood but I included arguments to state my case.

Your arguments weren’t specific to the 80s. You described the 90s as well. You just don’t realize it because you stopped doing teenage shite in the 90s. Going to the mall to look at girls, arcades, video games, Saturday morning cartoons, riding bikes, playing outside, etc.

Also, crack was readily available in the 80s, so not sure why you think only weed and X were.

The 80s was the pinnacle for several genres of music. There’s a reason you have stations dedicated to it and supermarkets playing it in a loop. A great decade for blockbuster movies and TV sitcoms if not a bit fluffy and formulaic.

Fashion not so much.

But yeah it was a great time to grow up. John Hughes movies, Fast Times and similar movies captured it well.

It was the start of some bad trends too. People glued to computers, video games and cable TV (and opinionated cable news) all started in the 80s. Helicopter parenting became a thing. Social media wasn’t around at least.

I was a middle school and high school in the 80’s and then in my 20’s for the 90’s. What a great time to grow up and be young. I feel for kids that had the 2000-2010s to grow up and be young in.

Born in 68. The ten year period from 76-86 was the GOAT.

--Skateboards
--Star Wars
--Video Arcades
--Atari 2600
--LP's with awesome cover art
--Component Stereo Systems with Floor speakers
--You could buy a worn out 71 Hemi Cuda for $500 and fix it up.
--Loni Anderson, Farah Fawcett, Heather Thomas posters
--The Mc frickin' D.L.T.
--Astroworld
--The Cubs and Harry Caray on WGN
--Pre-HFCS Coca-Cola
--too much more to list

There is a scene in the movie E.T. that could NEVER happen today: When the feds are chasing the kids on their bikes through the neighborhood, those kids knew all the short cuts, yards without fences, dirt trails, ditches, canals, etc. They easily got away from the feds because they were so dialed in to the neighborhood. Today's kids don't even know their next door neighbors and couldn't ride a bike more than half a block before they started missing their phones. I remember that I knew my neighborhood exactly like those kids knew theirs. Oh...and get off my fookin' lawn.

I was born in 1978 so I spent ages 1-21 across the entirety of the '80s and '90s.

Looking back on it, one of the best things about that period was there wasn't as much war or bullshite back then. The World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, etc., were all the in the past. Nothing really tumultuous culturally, relatively speaking. Also pre-9/11.

If you don't count Carter's single year in 1980, only three presidents served during that time and all were more successful and/or respected than most presidents in the few decades before or since. Collectively, Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton were nowhere near as bad and/or divisive as Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson or Bush II, Obama, Trump, Biden.

The '80s also started bringing the world into the modern era with major leaps in computer technology, gaming, etc. But it hadn't taken over everyone's lives yet.

Every generation will envy the technology of the next generation to some extent, but the '80s and '90s were a great time to be a kid - and an American in general.

A vote for the 50's. Most kids were in two parent homes and grew up around family. Neighborhoods existed and misbehavior got reported and handled within the family.

Towns and cities had healthy ethnic neighborhoods.

Schools were not dumbed down.

Most kids knew friends who had more money than their family and they also knew friends who didn't have as much money. And they all played together, only some had better softball gloves.

Old cars were affordable AND repairable. Once repaired, they kept running.

We trusted Huntley Brinkley for the evening news and newspapers had News and sports, etc.

We'd never heard of Viet Nam and Korea was far away and the armistice for there did happen.

Born in 72. Was in elementary from fall 77-spring 82, middle school from fall 82-spring 86, and high school from fall 86-spring 90. The 1980's were the greatest years ever. As many have said music, movies, arcades, video games, tv shows, cartoons, toys, etc. What hasn't been mentioned is sports. SEC football on TBS, MLB Game of the Week on Saturday afternoons with Vin Scully, Joe Garigiola, Tony Kubek, or Bob Costas. The MLB playoffs were on NBC and ABC. NBA on CBS, Monday Night Football actually was a really big deal. NFC on CBS with Madden and Summerall. AFC on NBC with Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen. You even had Monday Night Baseball on ABC, and NBC would have a game on sometimes Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. Cable or in our case a satellite dish led to the Braves(TBS) and Cubs(WGN) becoming popular. As a Reds fan I could finally watch them on satellite dish feeds. Bowl games meant something. New Years Day was a click fest with the Cotton Bowl on CBS, the Fiesta on NBC, the Sugar on ABC, the Rose and Orange also on NBC. March Madness became huge on CBS after the tourney expanded to 64 teams in 1985. You could watch your favorite team for the most part, but not every game was on TV, especially college football, so you still had to listen to the radio broadcast to keep up with the game. I could go on and on. All the iconic teams in all leagues. The Celtics and Lakers saved the NBA. The 49ers, Bears, Redskins, and Giants in the NFL. MLB was no longer dominated by a few teams and different teams were in the playoffs every year. The Miami Hurricanes, Herschel, Bo, Vinny, etc.in college football. I could go on and on for hours. Man, I miss the 80's.

My childhood straddled the 70s into the 80s with my teen years taking up most of the 80s. It was an amazing time to be alive, the apex of American civilization. I pity those who missed it.

For example, say “ yeah but in the 2000’s we get to fap to internet porn”. That’s a legit argument.

'72 baby here and I contend that whatever/whomever the magic nudie mag fairy that would deposit random smut in the woods back it the '80s, beats internet porn.

The joy and wonder of walking thru the woods and stumbling upon a Penthouse or Playboy is WAAAYYYY better than internet porn. There's no surprise or joy attached to the internet. But finding a mag in the woods, was like hitting the lotto as a 4th grader.

Could you watch porn on your phone in the 80’s?

That’s what I thought…

Open parties. Those were the best in high school. There was always one you could go to.

Listening to LSU games on the radio because if you were lucky they only came on about 4 times a year.I remember sitting around with my brothers and cousins listening to the LSU/USC game in 79 and acting out the game. John Ferguson could really paint a picture with his voice.

During the summer we would disappear daily from home at 930 - 10.00 travel the neighborhood until about 530 and dinner.

Friday nights were the Dukes of Hazzard...the mid 80's were Friday party nights unless it rained then it was Miami Vice.

The Plaza on Saturday mornings starting about 11 am

Mid South wrestling in the early 80s and the Junkyard Dog,Ted DiBiase, Kerry Von Erich and Kamala the Ugandan Giant.

I remember when my Dad bought our first computer the Radio Shack TS 80 where you had to load a program wait 20 minutes then you could play games after the download.

Being able to go into college bars at 16 and actually be able to drink then getting really drunk on your 18th birthday when you were of legal age

Gun racks in the back windows of pick up trucks and the cops and school admin could give 2 shits about it.

Sunday afternoon football games at Kenilworth Park with all the Catholic League guys....we had Holy Cross, Jesuit, Brother Martin and St.Aug all getting together and playing on the same teams. Try 15 on 15 shirts and skins tackle with no pads....it was great.

Still had stadium rock concerts either at the dome and a few at Gormley.

Yes.

Next question.

In truth, mid/late 70s to early/mid 90s is the range. 80s is the sweet spot.
