bleach or algae killer annually will help prevent it.

Now it'll need to either be snaked out or forced with air or water pressure to clear the blockage.

Edit: but since you are on the northshore, the plumber might want to rip it all out and start over.

The AC guy found a leak in the coils and showed me where the coils are icing over.

He said he could replace the coils but it’ll cost $2k-4k. Or we could just replace both units for $15k-30k.

Either you misunderstood what he was saying or you need a new guy.

He showed you where the leak was or just that the coils were frozen?

If this dude has full drain pans and a frozen coil, he has two issues right? Algae in the drain line and a unit low on gas.

You have two problems. A/C units icing over because filters are stopped up or low on Freon.

Drain is probably stopped up from algae or attic insulation.

That’s been my experience but I’m no expert.

Just went through this similar headaches with my unit. Condensate line had a lot of buildup and bleach wasn’t doing the trick. Safe T switch in the line wasn’t functioning so water was draining back into the pan. Caught it before the pan float shut the system off.

I ended up replacing the 3/4 pvc run from the unit to where it tied to my vent, and properly supporting it every 4 feet as per code. It wasn’t supported previously so a few feet past the unit it was running flat on top of the ceiling joists. I also added some of the condensate chlorine tablets to hopefully prevent buildup in the future.
