No, Jones is an outside LB, sideline to sideline/cover guy. The Tennessee guys To’o To’o and Crouch are inside backers.

After already picking up Strong, I doubt we take more than one LB transfer unless they already suspect one of our other guys is heading to the portal.

Awesome if true but what’s the actual story behind the transfer? He was starting for a national champion runner up. Just not sure why someone would choose to roll on out of what seems like a great situation. Glad to have him either way, geaux tigas!!!!!

Why would Eli Ricks leave LSU? The world is strange.

Ya never know. From what we saw last year, the only good linebacker we had was Cox. Baskerville was decent sometimes and Damone Clark was awful. Behind Baskerville and Clark, we have two sophomores with 0 playtime. Bringing in linebackers that are known to be good and have playtime wouldnt be a bad idea.

And having depth at linebacker isnt a bad idea.

He chose to leave Clemson bc they were so high on an underclassmen at the same position is the story. I'd be willing to bet that he also just didn't mesh with the players/staff. I don't really take this as a character issue but rather just an opportunity for him to find a place more comfortable for himself to transition to the NFL. He's absolutely an NFL football player.

Sure, Bug Strong comes into a LB corps with Baskerville, Clarke, Sampah, White, Webb, Penn, etc. But, Mike Jones is still the proven difference maker right out of the gate of the group. His coverage skills and sideline to sideline pursuit are elite, and he comes in with a chip on his shoulder.

Mike Jones is an absolute take. I'd take To'To or Gaoteote with Jones, too. But, I think they will go elsewhere if Jones pops first. Then, you go OL (maybe not a plug and play but a guy that can get up to speed quick) or best player available.

Look at our depth chart. Then go look at Clemsons from last year.

You are welcome.

At this point, I believe Webb still a LB, along with White and Sampah.

I’m not saying it’s a terrible idea to take another LB, but I think we basically have 0 shot at the UT guys. Why would they come here when the SEC has already made a statement about Gilbert saying he would not be immediately eligible under current SEC rules? I don’t think those rules will change, no matter what the NCAA does. Theses guys aren’t going to sit a year here when they can start next season somewhere outside the SEC.

I’m surprised none of these guys got real playing time last year considering how bad our defense was last year. Especially Webb thought he would contribute early regardless

I'm assuming Baker probably recruited him pretty hard to Miami?

Edit...don't see an offer from Miami but feel certain there was contact from Miami since they pretty much have guys at all the IMG home games.

Lay that ineptitude at the feet of our DC/LB Coach last year. The mismanagement of the LB position was mostly, if not all on Pelini. Just look at Clark’s play in 2019 compared to 2020. I think these guys are going to look a world better under this staff.

This is the answer I was looking for. I should have asked why would he want to leave Clemson for here.

Saw something about the gators having a couple of in conference transfers one each from auburn and state. Both were listed as immediately eligible. They didn't have gilbert listed as eligible.

Don't think the reason gilbert isn't eligible yet has anything to do with transferring from one sec school to another.
