Regards Gilbert, I cannot help but think of the miserable days I spent in Korea and Vietnam. An enemy trying to kill me, seeing friends die, yet I had no option to "opt out." Maybe if someone had told me, "Hey, if you are tired of this shite, you can go home." Of course I had no option such as that. But, I volunteered to be where I was. Gilbert volunteered to play college ball and he made a commitment. I also made a commitment to my fellow soldiers and country. But, the truth is, the young man only knows what he knows. When he looks at himself in the mirror...will he like what he sees or just rationalize it away? We make our own prisons by our decisions in life.

I don’t think comparing college athletes to our military is fair

People who volunteer to be in our military are heroes who would die for our country and freedom. College football players would not

Opting out before the season is opting out

Opting out mid year or late-year doesn’t look great but not all opt outs are created equal. Separating emotions and fanhood from it you really can’t blame Marshall.

Now a freshman opting out would just be dumb.

Any opt-outs beyond this wacky season= quitting, unless it’s a Chase situation which you’d hate to see become a trend

First off...thank you for your service.

Second...you hit the nail on the head....this is today's truth. You can rationalize away anything you want.

The goals of College football have changed from a players perspective. For a long time it was about playing for your teammates in the hopes of winning a national championship. That was the mission.
Today, College football is nothing more than a pass through entity for the NFL. Players go to college because they have to, with the goal of making it to the NFL. They do this by doing what's best for them. Winning a team champions is secondary to their personal goals.

This is only made worse by the era of instant gratification.
