Kevin O’Connor from The Ringer has us taking Maryland center Jalen Smith?

The last two iterations of his mock draft he posted have us taking Jalen Smith center from Maryland. I feel very few are talking about us going that direction with a big man early. Do you think this is a real possibility, I see the logic behind the fit but I don’t know if I’m a fan.

He's been talked about a bit on here.

I think people see him as a potential great fit next to Zion. He's a floorspacer at 4/5 with some really good 3 point potential. He plays pretty hard and has really good fundamentals. Solid player that can shoot the 3.

Would be a very dumb pick, and i say that even if he turns into a really good player.

I always say don't draft on need, but we need a PG and a big SF, and there are plenty of those guys in this draft to choose from and there is no reason to not choose one of those two positions.

Huge possibility, and if we stay at 13 he's one of the 3 guys I want.

6'10" shot blocking rim runner that hits the 3 at 37%. He basically has Myles Turner's skills, whether that translates to the NBA is yet to be seen, but he has tremendous upside.

We drafted a project center last year at #8 and he showed flashes, which is about all anyone expected...and now we want to draft the same position this year when we have a clear need for a big wing?

I don't get that.

I would be okay with that pick. I kinda like all of the players that are available in our range. I don't see much star potential there (I favor some of the guards for that), but there are some guys who can be solid role players and good fits on the team.

You really should almost never even consider need when drafting. The NBA draft is the biggest crapshoot of them all imo, with so so so many of the guys in it are going to be bums. You pick the guy that you think has the best shot of making it and work it all out later. If you have two good players at the same position you are in a good spot, you can always trade one.

if you reach for need and pick a bum that wasn't #1 on your board, then you've wasted a pick

I’m really anxious to see his measurements. It needs to be elite and he needs to have gained some more mass as well. I think a spacer can be had in the second round. Guys like Oturu, Tillie, and Perry should be available with spacing ability. And if you get lucky Nnaji would be a steal in the second.

I think my main worry is he athletic enough to be that Ibaka or Myles Turner type or is he going to just end up being another Jah or Meyers Leonard who isn’t athletic enough to play on the defensive end in the NBA. I also don’t like that he isn’t a natural passer.

You always go best player available IMO.

There are plenty of minutes to go around. It's not like Jaxson Hayes is about to play 36 minutes per game. Even if we go best case scenario where Hayes works out and Smith works out, between Hayes/Zion/Smith there are plenty enough minutes for the 3 players to play in some rotation together.

It makes a lot of sense, but I think this is more projecting the fit than any real info from Pels' FO. Though I just cannot see us drafting a stretch 5 over a comparably rated wing with the FO's faith in Jax and it being a relatively cheap position to fill via free agency.

His athleticism/length stood out when they played LSU in the NCAA tournament a couple years ago. Have been a fan of his since, but id rather go for a higher upside player there

Teams use tiers. They have their guys they target/favor, but it is not just going down the big board and taking the top name.

I doubt Smith ends up in a tier above the other prospects available at 13. I think the FO knows we need to develop wing players and would use position/versatility/need as a differentiating factor within a tier.

He also translates well to playing the 4, and could realistically fit alongside Hayes just as good as he would fit alongside Zion

You don’t think it’s a little early to claim bust on Hayes haha? I don’t think Hayes is ready though so we do need another five but I agree that I think we could take a little more of a shot than Smith at 13.

He was expected to spend the year in the GLeague but injuries forced him to play and he was better than expected. He needs to get stronger and improve his BBIQ, but all of the raw tools are there.

What has Hayes not done that he's supposed to have done?

He might have been the wrong pick long term but he's not a bust yet
