I would talk to Employer A and tell him you got a job offer and see if he wants to bump your pay and go from there

I didnt see mention of which company?
Be careful with the big EPCs because they will lie straight to your face to get you on. Then, when work gets slow will pretend they dont know you.

CivilEngr89 - I've been on the project for over a year now and would be happy to give you my rundown on the project and living in the area. Let me know how I can get in touch if you're interested.

You are exactly right, I have two great options in front of me. I really cant go wrong, its just a matter of prioritizing my life and what I value over the others.

Why not simply spend a hundred bucks and form an LLC. Be sure to document all the effort it would take to open the business, research, travel, etc. Then, you have more tax deductions, you will actually get to keep more of what you currently make and you don't have to move. Ask around.

You're only 30. That's the age to take the risks.

So I saw where you said who you would be working for and only thing I can suggest is possibly finding a place in grand lake or bell city that may cut your commute to say 40 minutes a day instead of an hour. Just a suggestion. Also if it were me I’d def get in touch with the guy on here that said he’s been working on that project. He’d prob have better advice for you than anyone else

I’d suggest a different approach at making the correct decision under your current situation. Instead of just weighing pros and cons in the conventional method, determine what YOU WANT at some point in the future (5yr, 10yr, 15yr) and do which one is going to achieve that. The whole pros and cons thing is what ppl do to try and justify what’s really in their heart and to feel like they did the “conservative” thing to justify it to others around them...it it’s not an intentional/pointed way of making a decision. If your near term goal is to have a simpler life with low stress and plenty of time for recreational activities then it sounds like this new job will create the opposite situation for you. If that near term goal doesn’t align with your long term goals then you have not done enough deep dive on yourself to make a decision that you’ll be 100% at peace with. Always start with what you want and will this decision get closer to your goals or help you attain them. Once you determine that, it’s pretty simple and you’ll never have any doubt or regret about the decision you made.

Dude move. Whether its living in an rv or a long commute, this is an opportunity to permanently improve your life. After 2 years, you will have experience at a whole other pay scale that sets you up for other opportunities later in life, as well as varied expertise.

Anyone can do anything for two years. Worst case you hate it and move on to better things afterward. As far as loyalty to your existing company, no one expects anyone to work for them forever. You’ve given them 7 years good in you. Now its time for you to move one. Loyalty is not sacrificing yourself for someone elses benefit. Thats you not taking care of yourself and future family.

This is a no brainer. Dont be naive.

I posted a construction manager/PM opening last year on all the major job seeking sites. I got a ton of resumes but very few were what I was looking for (commercial construction experience). You know what the vast majority of the resumes were?

engineers at big firms (Shaw/CGI/turner/CSRS/etc) looking fo move out of their rut.

Zissou - definitely interested in discussing, trying to figure out best way to communicate. I actually turned the offer down now they're asking if I would change my mind if they up the offer... Would still like to hear what you have to say about it. Really appreciate it.

Civil, did you end up making the move? Currently in your situation now, was curious if you made the move and what your thoughts were.

Do it. It will be worth it in the long run.

I did exactly this ~8 years ago, commute was same, was large $250m project.. Have not looked back and been steady growth.

Get sorted with the SO on it and on the same page, maybe bring her with you if you can.

I am approached by a new company looking for someone to fill a roll on their construction site that would be a lot of responsibility.

”roll” =/= role

Don’t take the new job in BFE, you’re building a career and life in BR.
