Brees turns 41 years old January 15. If he does decide to return as his teammates expect, he will need a new contract, one that likely will pay him in excess of $30 million annually based on the contracts other high-level quarterbacks signed in the past year.

If Brees is wanting and expecting $30M per season to return to the Saints, then let him walk. He can take much less, and free up cap space to add more depth and talent. Need to address the areas of WR, DB, and the DL for starters.

And what QB do you bring in to make a championship bring that won't cost around that?

Yes let’s all overreact to random press speculation based on deals other QBs have made

brees never asked to be the highest paid QB, not once ever

all he asked for was fair market value for the position and his level of play (top 5 pay) so get outta here with acting like drew is being greedy and hes the problem.

if we paid him $30 mill a year he would be in the middle teens as far as rankings of what other teams pay their starting QBs

$40 mill is what dak is asking for, let that sink in, DAK frickin prescott is asking for $40 mill

Brees is royalty. If he wants to play one or two seasons making more money than he's actually worth, you are going to bend over and take it, because that's what he's earned.

Yup he’s not worth that much. Outplayed by Keenum, Goff and now Cousins the last 3 playoffs.

Take a pay cut or GTFO, nerd.

He’s 41. If he wants another Super Bowl he’d be smart to sign for 10-15 and free up some space. He’s made a ton of money. He’s probably got 2 years left.

If Brees gets 25-30 from the saints then screw his legacy.

Take it easy, everybody.

When it comes to this issue, fans need to be especially careful because it is very complicated and the facts are not easy to find.

Carefully determine all facts. Identify areas in which speculation cannot be avoided. Derive logical conclusions therefrom.

Leave. Emotion. Out. of. the. Equation.

Doesn't Brees salary cap cost $15.9 Mil for 2020? If he gets $25 Mil for 2020 and 2021, and spreads the cap hit over 2 years, then Saints will pay him $25+$8M=$33mil for each year.
That's a big hit. How much can Saints afford for the rest of the team?
Would Brees give a discount and take $20M per year or decide to retire?

I think he should line up at the 10, throw a ball as far as he can and then divide that by two and that's his salary for 20 and 21.

You do realize we'll have $21mil in dead money if he's not on the roster next season, right?

So you can pay Brees $30mil, or some 3rd string QB level player $9mil and you have the same amount of salary cap tied to your QB.

But hey, let's go with that 3rd string QB, right?

ESPN is saying we take a 21.3 Million dollar dead space hit if he walks.

quote:

Like Brady, Brees' contract will void after the season, with the Saints on the hook for $21.3 million in dead money on their 2020 cap. If Brees isn't on the roster by the first day of the new league year, the Saints will eat that penalty for years of saving money on his deal. (The figure above is calculated with that $21.3 million on the books.)

Gonna be hard to start the bidding under that unless Drew REALLY wants a championship.

realistically, letting Drew walk closes a window. How long it would take to open another depends on what we get at QB play.

With the expected CAP increase it may not be that big of a deal.

Anyways, the most sensible approach here, which I think even DB would accept is to give him a respectable base and incentivize the contract with performance bonuses (both personal and team focused). Obviously, the largest being post season success.

I know DB wants to win and win another championship—with the Saints.

Nonetheless, the overall panic I’ve heard from many is silly; especially, those calling for T Hill to be the starting QB are laughable. He is exciting and he threw on long completion. One!!! I would even argue that the completion (though under thrown) was more a result of surprise that he actually threw the ball rather than running the ball.

This organization is full of idiots if they pay him 30M next season. He was full on throwing ducks with a noodle arm last weekend.
