Parents of the OT: Did you tell your kids the truth about Santa and if so, at what age?

I've got three kids and the only one I've told was my oldest son. He was in third grade and I had the whole thing beautifully planned out. Was going to tell him about the historical St. Nicolas and that his spirit is what lives on and how the funnest part of Christmas is giving gifts without any expectation that the person who receives them will know that you gave them to him.
Welp it didn't go as planned....he wasn't ready and started crying. It was like I destroyed part of his innocence that day. Nervously, I blurted out "but the Easter bunny is still real." Don't think he believed me.
So I'm sure my other two know, but I'm just going to let them figure out on their own.

Never told them, it was easy to tell when they knew, but we all continued to play along.

I haven’t told my oldest yet (10yo). I remember nearly driving into the ditch when my parents told me. I think I’ll let them figure it out on their own

No, they figure it out on their own.
They put 2+2 together around 5-7.

I'm not a parent, but I appreciated my parents allowing me to find out as a young kid in school.
I learned about fricking the same way.

When I was young (1st or 2nd grade, maybe 3rd), my dad and I were at mass around Christmas time and the priest just starts talking about how Santa isn't real during the homily. You had parents holding ears over their young children.
On the walk home, I asked my dad if it was true. All he said was "yes, but if you tell your mother you know we're returning your presents this year." I kept my mouth shut about it for the next couple of years.

Never tell, they figure it out on their own time.

My daughter figured it out when she was 7 or 8, but was scared to death to let us know. She told my son who was 11 or 12 at the time and he had a meltdown.

I'm 31 and my parents still write "From Santa" on Christmas gifts that we get on Christmas morning

Wow, what kind of arse hole are you.
PSA to new parents - let your kids have a childhood.

My oldest is just now old enough to get into Santa/Christmas, so we haven't crossed that bridge yet.
My wife had the news broken to her when she was 5 by her mom. Her mom kept asking her what she wanted for Christmas, and my wife would only tell her that Santa knew what she wanted. My mother in law finally got frustrated and told her there was no Santa and she better say what she wanted or would get nothing, destroyed my father in law

My wife and I told our kids from the start that St. Nicholas was a real person but that Santa Claus is a symbol of the holiday. We’ve asked that they respect the other kids though.
I don’t believe in lying to my kids even for something as benign as Santa

My mother telling me was probably my most vivid memory as a 6yo.

We never told our kids that there's a fat guy with flying reindeer sliding down chimney's with toys made by elves at the north pole, if that's what you mean.
We do much like what another poster said: "My wife and I told our kids from the start that St. Nicholas was a real person but that Santa Claus is a symbol of the holiday."
My parents were pissed and think we've robbed them of part of their childhood. After a few rounds of that I reminded them that they had their chance to raise kids, now it's our turn.
