One question I have always wanted to ask a real atheist is: What keeps you in line? Most crimes go unsolved. What keeps you from murdering someone who aggravates you?

I'm not religious at all but have always understood the teachings of the church were necessary for an ordered society.

Are you implying you don’t murder people people because an invisible entity is watching and judging you?

I have acquaintances who are atheist. When I ask them, "What is the Source of Morality?" They say something like, "We're born with it," or "Morality is innate in human nature."

Interesting that parents never have to teach children to do the wrong thing....we're born knowing that.

I don't want to live in a society where murder is a normal means of conflict resolution.

It makes for poor civilizations.

Additionally, I'm a human being capable of empathy. I don't want to be murdered so I'm quite certain others don't want to be murdered either.

Atheists do not need Christianity to know that things like murder and rape are bad. I want to live in a peaceful society and be safe from harm because I am a rational human being with a conscience.

More agnostic than atheist, but what keeps people from murdering people who aggravate them is a conscience, a moral compass notwithstanding belief in a deity, a desire not to be imprisoned, a logical thinking brain, deductive reasoning, being a nice person, being a good person, being a rational reasonable human being.

Although I will confess to coming very close to murdering left lane hogs. Very close.

Well, that's just a butt fricking stupid question.

I'm atheist and the answer is, because I'm a decent human being.

It's called a conscience. It's something God gives you. Kinda ironic isn't it?

An innate desire not to cause harm to my fellow human beings.

I have a question. Can your dead relatives see everything you do, and if so, how awkward is that meeting gonna be?

Other than sociopaths, well adjusted individuals possess a conscience. That’s what keeps us “in line. Perhaps the human conscience is what people refer to as God.

I attended Catholic schools from K- College but I no longer practice nor do I have any deeply held beliefs in a all powerful god. I still respect the teachings of Jesus and pray from time to time to whatever ethereal being might be listening but who or what that is I have no idea. Beyond just an innate sense that causing harm to others does not feel good I realize that society would crumble if we ceased to treat each other with kindness, civility, and respect. My catholic upbringing absolutely played a role in informing my moral sense but my Jesuit priest theology professor I think put it best Even an atheist can be a Christian. I try to be a good person with no expectation of reward/punishment/ at the time of my death.
When religious individuals behave morally based solely on the concept of reward or punishment, heaven or hell they are operating on a very child like way of viewing morality.

Because I value a society that is peaceful and prosperous, and those sorts of behaviors do not create such a society.

Honest question, if there were no God you'd behave like that?

The fear of divine retribution is not what stops people from murdering each other. That's silly. Catholics have confession for that anyway, if it was a concern.

Empathy and compassion, which are fundamental human emotions but can be reinforced by religion, prevent it.

I'm Catholic and some of the most vile, hypocritical people I know are also of a Christian denomination. Yet, the kindest, most gentle human being I know has been an atheist his entire life. How many times have you seen murderers/gang members with religious tattoos? "Only God Can Judge Me", praying hands, crucifixes, and the like.

It's all subjective of the individual.

Murder is against the law. The risk far outweighs the reward.

The social contract, which if abided by allows for subjective happiness within western society as currently constructed. Additionally, random acts of violence for the sake of violence serve no real evolutionary advantage and are more likely to hurt my chances of propagating the species.

What I've always wanted to ask religionists is: what would you do if Jesus commanded you personally to start knifing babies and small children to death?

It's very Darwinian to take, rob, kill and do everything one can to promote one's own genes over any others by any means necessary.
Survival of the fittest.

If no God no morals.

I think athiest want religion around to make the world safer and just easier for them to bitch about religion lol.
