Worst Defense to Win National Championship Recently?

Right now LSU is ranked 25th in the country in total defense and is outside the top 30 in opposing TDs. While those certainly aren't horrible rankings, I do wonder historically how top teams that did not have "elite" defenses have fared. Has there been a recent team with a defense similarly situated to LSU (or worse) to win it all?
EDIT: So it looks like 2014 Ohio State and 2010 Auburn are the only recent National Champs with a similar (or worse) defensive ranking to what LSU has now. Obviously those numbers are skewed by strength of schedule however. Thoughts?

Ohio State in 2014 was 26th in scoring
Auburn in 2010 was 56th in scoring.

Also, you have to think other teams will come back towards the mean this season as they play tougher schedules. LSU has played a tough schedule so far compared to most.
And we have these teams left to play and their scoring offense rank (Against D1 only):
Mississippi State - 70th
Ole Miss - 80th
Arkansas - 60th
Texas A&M - 76th
and of course these:
Auburn - 31st
Alabama - 1st

Statistically, probably Auburn in 2010.

Alabama went 14-1 last year giving up more YPG and 3 PPG fewer than LSU is right now. They were nearly identical on 3rd downs, opponents converted 34%.
A portion of the fan base is sky screaming about LSU's defense, and it's blown way out of proportion.

Florida State definitely won in 2013. And they were the number 3 defense that year. So no.

Auburn won the SEC. No where in the OP does it specify "national championship".
So, yes, Auburn in 2013.

I think he most important defensive star is defensive SP+ which considers many different Things and is an advanced metric which accounts for when backups are in, when game is out of hand, etc, has bama 11 and LSU 36 I believe. Wish I had the link. People think this bama defense is bad but they are still a top 10 defense. We are getting there.

I mean't national championship. Maybe I should have been clearer.

Alabama was a top 5 defense till the Championship game.

And LSU is top 12 or so without the Texas game, what's your point?
