but it was with Lee under center that the team won their first 7 games.

It was also with Lee under center that LSU threw two interceptions in the first game against Bama.

If anyone not named Jefferson should've played that game, it was Mettenberger, not Lee.

Rewatch the game; the 2nd half was completely dominated by LSU. The first half was completely dominated by Georgia. Fortunately, TM and our defense came to play.

WTH happened?

Here's a tale I was told, one I've mentioned on here before. This came from my cousin who was a HS coach at the time and his friend was one of the state troopers who escorted the HC at that time. As the story goes 2 players, TBob and Russel Sheppard approached Miles before the game to inquire if Jarret Lee would get any playing time in that game. Miles response was that both players should be concerned with their own playing time. He then turned to Stud and told him if Lee goes in the game Stud will be looking for a job the next season. IDK how much of this is truth and how much is distorted banter infected by the proverbial grapevine of rumor. But I don't believe my cousin would make anything up and I know that particular officer wouldn't make it up. What I do know is Lee didn't see the field that night and TBob and Sheppard played sparingly. When I watched LSU take the field that night I saw a lot of players who were not in the least bit pumped to play that game. That oline did not play up to their potential in that game. Miles ran the same plays he did in the first game. He made no changes as the game progressed, just kept on running the same plays. The one play that did work in the first game was the sweep and LSU ran that several times, more than the first game, to no affect. I believe had Miles inserted Lee it would have really got those guys pumped to play well for the dude. Changing QB's has been known to work out well. Miles lost that game, he lost in in several ways. He lost it the very moment he hired an inadequate person as OC. Stud did not posses the IQ to compete with the likes of satan, err saban. Watching Les Miles stand on that sideline and just watch that event unfold literally made me nauseous. It was sickening. I mean, do something, make some kind of change, run some type of play that the defense hasn't seen. After watching Miles that game I lost what little respect I had for him.

I heard Miles had nudes of the troopers wife.
My mailman’s brother knows the cousin of the troopers hair dresser. TIFWIW

T-Bob didn't play either. which is why Bobby was pissed. but T-Bob was on the radio here shortly after the game saying all the rumors about locker room mutiny and the like were false.

Stud was a fill-in in 2011 because Kragthorpe got diagnosed with Parkinson's just before the season. hiring Stud wasn't really a bad move since he'd been an OC before, and had some success with it.

Lee's girlfriend/fiance left him during the season. He dropped out of life, missed 21 or so straight days of class and basically could not play.

well this is one I hadn't heard before

yeah the SECCG encapsulated a lot about that 2011 team

in big games we would get an incredible momentum rush from a big defensive or special teams play, use that to dominate for a bit and break the will of the opposing team (even against Bama Reid's amazing pick saved us)

in the national title game Bama simply avoided those plays and LSU had NOTHING. Saban played about as vanilla as possible to avoid any big Defensive or ST play and we couldn't cross the 50.

Nope, they were not down 14 - 0. Yes, the offense was putrid in the 1st half, but dominated the 2nd half.

Hate to say it, but because they didn't give Jarrett Lee a chance...we needed a pocket passer for that game, JJ couldn't scramble against that Bama D

JJ couldn't read a defense, he had plenty of arm and could throw accurately if you gave him 1 read

JL was scared to get hit and was particularly intimidated by BAMA

they were both bad, Les just went with the tougher more athletic guy

The offense in the 1st half was one of the worst performances I've ever seen...until a week later and the offense did what they did in the NC.

Ding. Ding. We have a winner.

How anyone could watch the 2011 SECCG and not come away with some very real concerns is beyond me. TM7 completely changed the momentum in that game all by himself. JJ was absolutely putrid in the first half, yet Lee never got a chance to enter the game. We wore the Dawgs down in the 2nd half, but the offensive game plan was hot garbage.

The OL blocking would've gotten both immobile QBs murdered.
With that rush mostly short passes were what were available (65% compl). I recall announcer saying Brees would've had a bad day.

The 3rd string kicker would have been better than JJ.

But that was Les' boy. This is another reason in the long list I despise Miles.

Why did that team not win a National Championship that year?

1. rematch against Bama

2. offense started regressing each week since JJ came back to the team, starting with Kentucky. it was subtle at first but once JJ was your starting QB again, the offense started to sputter more and more.

3. Les not trusting JL12 once JJ came back, thus allowing JJ to win the starting job after both didn't play particularly well against Alabama during The Game of the Century.

I hope that answers your question.

FWIW, if Lee wasn't pulled against Bama, we would've lost that game too.

I understand that JJ was the answer against the Gumps in round 1 due to his ability to help the running game, but after that when you are playing defenses that are nowhere near the caliber of Bama when a balanced attack will win you games, JL12 should've been your QB the rest of the year...

Obviously you didn’t watch the first half. In hindsight we should have saw the national title shut out coming with how awful the offense played in the SEC title.

The defense kept putting the team in such good situations that everyone not named bama would fold.

That was such a strange game. Everything about it felt off. You could see it in the eyes of the players and the coaches. They just couldn't get up for the rematch with bama. They had played the Game of the Century and thought that was all behind them. They knew bama was the only team in the country who could beat them. And then they had to play them again.

bama on the other hand was pumped about getting a rematch. They were ready. The fact that it was only 21-0 just goes to show how much talent LSU had on defense. That game could've been 50-0.

That was the most embarrassing thing I've ever watched as a sports fan. If you get beat that's one thing but to never even try to make adjustments to give yourself a chance to compete, that's inexcusable. Those players deserved better.
