As the pain and terror of death approached, Epstein refused to simply extend his legs and save himself.

Again, been awhile since I took asphyxiation 101, but the reflex to save yourself is involuntary, is it not?

Kinda hard to save yourself when a 300 pound cellmate who looks like the Hulk is pulling you down.

There is the ancient legend of a stoic master who willing placed his arm to fire until the bone was exposed.
Perhaps Epstein was the latest master to guide us.

I imagine if you were extremely determined you could get to a point where you passed out.

Then gravity and no oxygen would take it from there, no?

Ive posted this a couple times now but it doesnt fit the hopeful narrative. I guess I'll waste a little more of my time anyway. Robin Williams hung himself using the dopr hinge to a bathroom closet as the anchor point for an electrical cord. The way he hung himself dictated that he was found in a nearly seated position hovering just above the floor. In other words, the seat of his arse was about 3 or 4 inches off the floor. His legs could have clearly saved him if he wanted them to but he did not. He was successful in nearly an identical situation as Epstein.

as a 1st responder often tasked with the aftermath of suicides, this “passive” method of asphyxiation is becoming far more common than the classic hang em high

so yes, you have no idea what you’re talking about but go ahead and chime in as an expert because everyone’s a frickin expert

There's a reason why people who are successful at hanging themselves, do something about their hands before they commit.

Not an asphyxiation major in college or anything but I am in federal law enforcement and have seen this stuff first hand.

It is involuntary to save yourself indeed, the same reason it's literally impossible to purposely drown yourself. You can swim down 30 feet with the intention of never turning back, but your body will take over and basically force you to.

I'm not saying it's impossible - as others in this thread have pointed out. Just that it would take steel determination and the ability to overcome that involuntary will to live - i.e. Epstein would've REALLY wanted to die
