Wrigleyville in the summer is pretty darn amazing

And I said my list stands. Then he said my entire list was wrong and Chicago was the best.
To which I replied that it's kind of odd if Chicago is the best city around that he's wanting to move.
Conversations develop over time.

Not really. I pointed out other cities that are better than Chicago, and he said they weren't. Yet based on his OP, doesn't sound like Chicago is all that great of a city if he's wanting to move to another one.
this is what you said

Not really. I mean isn't the entire point of this thread the fact you hate Illinois and all the taxes and other crap you have to deal with in Chicago?
First you bitch about it, now you're defending it as the most amazing city in the US.
Clearly either missing or ignoring or failing or refusing to comprehend the part where I said I love the city. If that statement among the rest of the context of the OP was lost on you, that's on you for being dumb. Stop doubling down on stupidity. You're making everyone else dumb as you try.

No, I perfectly understand. I'm just wondering if it's so amazing, why are you wanting to move?

Probably because of the reasons listed in the OP if I had to guess.
See a place can be amazing but still have certain aspects that make you want to leave.

you can love a city, the people, the weather, and hate its politics
its not hard of a concept

Sounds like the city wasn't really that amazing then if you're wanting to move.

Only if you're incapable of nuanced thought.
Every city on Earth has pros and cons. The pros can be amazing, but the cons still drive you out.

Read the first post brah. You seem to be the only one not grasping the concept. That's a you problem.

Pay about $90 a year for a "city sticker"...basically a charge to own a car in the city
Have one of the highest sales tax rates in the country, over 10%
Have incredibly high real estate taxes...I'll pay about $6,000 for my 1,100 sq ft condo this year
Pay $.07 a bag at the grocery store
We were going to pay $.01/oz for drinks (sweetened and not), but somehow the court struck that down...they'll probably try again
They're looking to push through a progressive state income tax, changing from the flat tax that has been in place for forever
I'm not a smoker, but those who are pay taxes of $3.66 a pack
Have tolls on all the expressways
Oh, and while the state is essentially junk bond level and heading toward bankruptcy, the state politicians just voted themselves a raise...imagine that...a job where the employees can give themselves raises
They're looking to add a tax to bars and restaurants within 10 miles of McCormick to fund an expansion there (but stadiums and arenas are exempt for some reason)
A lot of that are city taxes.
Move to one of the many nice Chicago suburbs.

If I only listened to the news I'd never go to Chicago, but it's really a good city to visit.

I'm perfectly capable of nuanced thought. And the nuance here is that you view a city in its totality, not just all the cool and amazing entertainment options.
Chicago is a great city to visit, but it's way, waaaay down on my list of cities to live in for this very reason.

Real estate is still really expensive in the areas I'd want to go to and you're so removed from what's great about the city that I would rather bounce and get a great place somewhere else like Nashville or Charleston. But yeah, a lot of my friends have done that once they started having kids and making great money. Winnetka seems to be popular.

We just came back from a long weekend in Chicago/Grand Rapids/Bensenville. I was really baffled by some shite.
That Metra is a clusterfrick particularly to transfer to subways(Bensenville to Wrigley Field for example) compared to Atlanta's Marta and DC's Metro.

quote:I had NO idea why every time I went into a convenience store and had 5-6 items they just assumed I was going to carry all that shite. I said "I need a bag please." Never got charged b/c I was clearly a retarded southerner with no clue about their shitty bag policy. But that's certainly something I've never experienced before except at Q(old Cuban) Liquor on Perkins in Baton Rouge. MFers hate bagging your booze.
Pay $.07 a bag at the grocery store
quote:Driving to/from Grand Rapids from O'hare I used the "avoid tolls" option on Google Maps for the first time in my life. After we spent $8 to get about 10 miles.

Just be careful if you leave your house unattended in the Winter.

Metra is great, the CTA not as much Though the CTA has great coverage, unlike many/most of the other cities Centinel listed.
I will say that Metra Northwest line that you can drink on, which drops you in the parking lot of Arlington Park for a day of betting on the ponies is

I just moved to one of the suburbs of Chicago. Taxes aren't low, but they are lower than in Cook County. Cook county taxpayers get hosed.
The housing costs are mostly reasonable around here especially compared to other large cities (NYC, Philly, San Fran, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc.). They are actually not far off from smaller and much crappier cities like Pittsburgh or Cleveland.
I'm okay with higher gas tax since my wife only drives a a few miles to work every day. I take the Metra train to the city. It's faster and cheaper than driving/parking and it's much more comfortable than CTA.

He's doing this. He listed the negatives and said that they are starting to outweigh the positives so he might want to leave. That's looking at the city in its totality.

So your reasons for not living there are similar to his for wanting to leave.

You know how I know you don’t know what you are talking about? May-September is probably the only time to go to Seattle. Basically Oct-April is the cold and dreary times. July in the PacNW might be the best place on the earth.
Actually, fall and spring in Seattle is also pretty nice. Highs in the mid 60s/high 50s, lows in the low 50s/high 40s. Rains about a third of the time during those months.
