LSU has more talent on Defense than Alabama and it will show this year.

Thats not my opinion but the opinion of some people who know more than me. Wait until after the season we can have this conversation again.

I'm not sure that I'd say more talent but talented enough in certain areas that I feel good about LSU'S defense being the best that Aranda has put on the field.

How many Clemson players were drafted this year?

How many Clemson D-Lineman were drafted high in the draft?

You win football games in the trenches. It’s amazing how few fans understand this simple rule of football. Win the LOS, you win games & championships.

Too many look at the overall class ranking. The key is how many 4 & 5 star OL & DL are we signing.

Recruiting is crucial and that’s the one thing that always kept me positive about Coach O’s hire. He’s building something special.

Saban is no coaching genius... Saban is a recruiting genius.

Not being an arse, but like @Brazos said, elite recruiting is as important or more important than game day coaching from the HC in college football.

Saban acknowledged as much in one of his first conversations with Moore after being hired.
quote:

Saban asked Moore if he thought he just hired “the best football coach in the country.”
Somewhat taken aback, Moore said yes.
“Well you haven’t,” Saban told him. “I’m nothing without my players. But you did just hire one hell of a recruiter.”

So, as to your other comment,
quote:

Give just about any college coach 30 NFL players on one roster and he is going to win a lot of games
; that is kind of a drastic oversimplification. No one is giving a coach, especially one trying to turn a program and culture around, anything. They have to go out and get them... then keep getting them

What's more and what is missing is that Saban is an elite organizational manager. He knows how to build and sustain a successful team across all facets in spite of personnel turnover (staff and players) and evolutions of the game.

I think he is one of the very best coaches when given time to prepare. But, he is average as a game day coach when the plan goes sideways or the prep period doesn't fit his process driven approach. He has been most successful in those situations when he has had elite coordinators to handle the adjustments. But, hiring and managing them is a HC task as well.

Last, it is gravely underappreciated how he has strung together so much player talent for so long and not had a major locker room implosion at some point. Many coaches have done it in sports, but it seems to always come to a head for them at some point and a very talented team completely underachieves. Meyer comes to mind for the latter example

Congrats to LSU though. I love coach O. True players coach. Now he will have talent and assistants to go along with it. That is more the Dabo model.

Clemson has arguably recruited as well as Alabama.

Their staff is obviously elite at talent evaluation, probably the best evaluators in college football. You have to be to consistently outperform your recruiting rankings as they have.

A few of them aren't really LSU fans. The others are just being Negatiger a..e contrarians.

Lmao

In the 2014 playoff between Bama and Ohio State, Bama's running game was destroying us. Then all of the sudden, Bama quit running it. We were all jacked about it, but that was not one of Saban's best coaching days.

Well I could have worded the original post a bit better. Saban is a very fine coach. Overall he s the best in the country, getting talent is part of being a great coach.

What I was trying to write is that I don’t think of Saban as being the smartest x’s and o’s guy around. His dominance is due to dominating talent. If Mullen had Alabama talent when he was at MSU and Saban had State talent, Mullen w8ns most match ups.

The point of the original post wasn’t to downplay Saban’s value as a coach, that part could have be n written better.

But my main point I still think is valid. Alabama has dominated the recruiting ratings in recent years and that’ has translated into dominance on the field. LSU used to have comparable talent, but that has changed.

And the talent gap isn’t even that close. Compared to most other SEC treats, LSU has superior talent. Alabama has just been on an unprecedented recruiting run.

This year, if the rankings hold, LSU will close the recruiting gap and that will show on the field one day, again assuming LSU actually ends up with the highest class.

Finally, I understand coaching can help overcome talent. Sure it can. But give me Bamas roster with a decent OC and DC and give Saban Vanderbilts talent and see what happens.

Coach Zero is a great recruiter! We will have more players than Bama drafted next year. We are definitely trending in a better direction now that Les is gone.

I think you make a ton of good points except
quote:

Saban is no coaching genius

He is a defensive back wizard. One of the best. He also schemes incredibly well on the defensive side of the ball generally (the Clemson and Georgia Southern games come to mind as outliers).
