8 teams. I think that's perfect.

LSU would get in on an at large bid in that scenario with an 8 team playoff.

But reward winning your conference.

MLB, NCAA BB, NFL all give division/ conference tournament winners an auto bid. Even when it results in better teams being left out.

It’s just makes sense.

Nothing silly with letting things be determined on the field. The first round of the playoffs should be the conference championship games.

Computer rankings - no committee.

8 spots. - 1 for each P5 champ. 3 for next highest 3.

First round games at higher rated home team. Semi’s and final like it’s done now.

8 team playoff

5 - Conference Champ of each P5 conference
1 - Best Non P5 (ex. UCF)
2 - Wildcards based on polls

It would give meaning to conference championships again and teams like UCF would quit bitching every year.

an 8 team playoff with 2 Wildcards would fix this.

Conference champ auto bids lets things be decided on about 2/3 of the field and in a conference’s home office.

A computer rating allows things to be determined on the complete field. It’s a silly idea, and nobody with any authority will ever consider anything close to it.

I agree. First off everybody needs to be in a conference. Align the conferences up to where there are 8 conference champions (conference championship games are the first round of the playoffs). Everybody has a shot to prove it on the field. There is no cheapening of the regular season at all..win your conference.

This literally disregards 1/3 of the regular season. The regular season has never been that cheapened.

Well at some point you WILL clinch your division. What's cheap is when a team does not win their conference and still is allowed a shot at the national championship.

You have to completely disregard 1/3 of the regular season to believe this. In 2003, there wasn’t a Big 12 team better than Oklahoma. On a single day in December 2003, there was one Big 12 team better than Oklahoma.

In 2017, there wasn’t an SEC team better than Alabama. On a single day in November, there was one.

The season is 12(/13) games long, not 8 or 9. If 14 teams want to get together and call themselves a conference and give their own special consideration to 8 of their games, good for them, but those other 4 games are still going to count.

It’s you. You want teams to prove it on the field for 8 or 9 games, disregarding on-field results of 3 or 4 games, which will never happen because it isn’t a good idea at all. My idea demands they do it for 12 or 13.

My idea is mathematically better than yours since teams would have to prove it on the field for an entire season rather than for a mere fraction of it.

You would think LSU should be left out of that for a #23 Mizzou team?
We'd get in as a wild card, which is exactly why wild cards exist. But the conference champ should get in - regardless of their record. That makes conf championship games extremely important, even more than today.

This is exactly why we have the system we have. If it was cut and dry we would lose the spirited back and forth of what the best ideas are.

but if a particular conference is loaded with great teams, then we shouldn't penalize them for happening to exist in the same conference.

Man, this is why wild cards exist. The second best team in the country might also happen to be the second best team in their conference.

so we shouldn't try to fix a flawed system because you like arguing about it???

call me a fuddy-duddy, but I'd go back to the traditional bowl system.

4 teams is too small for a playoff- it doesn't even allow all major conference champs to get in. Factoring in teams like Notre Dame (major independent), UCF/Boise (mid-major cinderella teams), and UGA/Ohio State (strong conference runners up), and it's really a mess.

Beyond the fact that worthy teams are left out, it also ruins the attitude of most of the programs. I don't suggest a participation trophy mentality, but quite honestly, consider LSU. Might go 10-2, which would be only the 7th time in school history to have such a record. Great? Nope, we don't make the playoffs, so it's a downer.
Contrast that with, say, 1987 LSU season. LSU didn't win the SEC, but did finish 10-1-1, won the Gator. That was considered one of the best seasons LSU has had, but if it happened today, it's a letdown.
