BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has unanimously approved the jersey retirement of LSU football All-American and former head coach Jerry Stovall. The jersey will be retired by LSU in a gameday ceremony during the 2018 football season in Tiger Stadium. The No. 21 worn by Stovall will join the No. 20 worn by Billy Cannon and the No. 37 worn by Tommy Casanova as retired jerseys in the LSU football program.

It’s a shame we haven’t retired an African American’s jersey yet.

A few years ago I put together a short video with some highlights of Stovall's career:

I thinknit Is a shame that some people think more of his time as HC than the fact that he was an elite player here.

He is very deserving of it.

I see Faulk and Dorsey as potential retirees as well.

I feel Like prominence of the # is a factor. You can’t retire like 7. Idk

Does this mean the number is retired? I'd hate to lose 21 for future players, that's a badass number

He ABSOLUTELY deserves to be honored. However, I'm not a fan of "retiring" numbers when you have 100+ guys on the team. Put his name on the stadium (like Cannon and Cassanova), but let guys still wear 21

I wish they would not retire anyone's jersey, and bring back #20 and #37

Same for the Saints and #8

No one player is too good to ever have their jersey number worn by someone else for all eternity. Besides, where would it end?

Faulk has to be next. I thought for sure he would, Stovall is certainly deserving too though.

I was fine with the ones before and I think Stovall certainly deserves his name to be in the ring of honor on the stadium like those...but you cannot do 21 without Dalton Hilliard as well. Why not both?

For those wondering if a "retired jersey" meant no one could ever again use "21", see the following from the article:

"Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007. The numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports."
