Because they get the extra tuition money, and they have the room

Yeah man, the Little Rock Nine had it coming!

You realize the black population back then was nothing like it is today, right? Poverty, crime, out-of-wedlock-pregnancies, and the decaying family unit didn't happen until the 70s.

Should be against the law for any public school to be completely predicated on segregation. This 2018 for Chrissakes.

You realize HBCUs are not black-only, right?

I think people just believe they are specifically for blacks, because they target blacks.

It's like calling Harvard an HWCU

It's a common misconception. Their primary purpose is to serve blacks, but students of all races attend. Some HBCUs have more white students than black (see West Virginia State).

You can thank Ronald Reagan

LBJ shares some blame too.

Why would Reagan be responsible for anything that happened to anyone on a national level in the 70s.

Actually, LBJ gets much of the blame.

Howard and Spelman, like Dillard and Xavier Universities in New Orleans, are PRIVATE universities. Different situation in regards to "shutting down".

I think it's ridiculous in this day and age that on the public dime, you have a Southern and LSU in Baton Rouge, a SUNO and UNO in New Orleans, an FSU and Florida A&M adjacent to one another in Tallahassee, etc. Complete waste of money. Especially when you look at academic standards for admission and graduation rates, it's fairly obvious it is a taxpayer-funded "separate and unequal" system.

“LISA” schools.

They still exist just under different organizational names. LISA > MPSA > MAIS

primary purpose and conditions for which and in which these schools were created and deemed necessary no longer existed. As such, they either closed up shop, or allowed black children to attend.

There primary purpose may no longer be stated as this, but it's kind of still the purpose of those schools.

They crashed the public schools in those areas during that time period, so there was no real possibility of going back.

His signature in the late 60s opened pandora's box of abortion, in our most populous state. That didn't spread at all in the 70s. The drug war was just icing on the cake.

Neither Spellman nor Howard has the reputation of a leading public university like UNC or Texas, let alone a leading private institution such as Harvard or Stanford.

That said, someone who intends to pursue a career within the HBCU system and tap into the money there would do well to go to school at an HBCU. You could meet the right people and build a lasting network that way. It's a great way to make sure you have fewer prospects anywhere else but for those who make it there's plenty of money. Russian is, as usual, correct with his observation.

Why shouldn’t people be allowed to self-segregate?

I don’t have a problem with people choosing to self seperate, but I think doing so based on skin color, through the use of the educational system, robs black folks of a better education and the state budget of much needed money.

I’d prefer they self separated through institutions about which I have a choice in funding.

Screw the functional students and the educational process, lets bring in functional illiterates to waste state dollars. And have to take a lot of political hack SUNO professors on the UNO staff to cause trouble for years.

This could be said about 95% of colleges. Hmmm I wonder why you singled out hbcus? Outside of STEM courses most colleges are scams

I always consider the conundrum of someone who would just wholesale close down schools based on the racial makeup of their students, which would of course inundate their white schools with more minorities.

Something tells me that guy who says close down the black schools wouldn't welcome the doubling, tripling, etc. of black students at his or his kids' schools.
