You could do it? What is your radio voice like?

I will never understand this stupid argument. Do you have to be able to sing if you think a song sucks? Do you have to be a film maker to know a movie sucks? No, because you've been listening to music and watching movies all of your life and know how it's supposed to be done.

They don't pay me a shite ton of money to be on the radio. I'm not the one that decided to be a public figure and put myself out there like that.

Same thing for people that say "can you do a better job than O?"

Hey a-hole. You didn’t say anything meaningful. So if he was so “terrible” in your OPINION, why is he in the HoF almost IMMEDIATELY upon retirement. Don’t tell me it was because he was lucky.

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS A RADIO Voice dumbass.
What are you in grade school? If so, isn’t it past your bedtime? Bye bye.
Go bitch about something else a-hole.

Wtf are you talking about? Someone challenges your statement and you don't know what to say, so you come back with a 3rd grade name calling post? Seriously? Jackass.

Not only that, you act as if I'm the only person that didn't like him. Btw clown, Chris Blair puts him to shame.

You obviously never heard John Ferguson call a game he was head and shoulders above Jim in voice quality and the ability to call a game.

Besides the infamous Jack Hunt call a typical Jim Hawthorne call went something like this. Washington vs LSU and Washington had received the kick off and got ball on the 20 which was before touchbacks were taken to 25. Washington third and two on their own 28 toss sweep and the running back brought down just past the 32. We will have to wait and see what the measurement says on a first down. Wait a minute the referee just signaled first down without a measurement how can they do that!

I mean the line to make was the 30 and Jim calls the runner down at the 32 and rants and raves over a minute on why there was no measurement?

That and Jim's legendary (in the athletic dept) spank-o-vision hotel movie rental charges during the SEC basketball tournament every year.

HOF really????????

Chris Blair is a great replacement in my opinion.
2He does a fine job.

The difference is, when I'm on the road and scanning radio channels, I'll hit a live sports broadcast and have to listen for player's name to be said before I know it's an LSU broadcast.

With Hawthorne, I knew it was LSU instantly. I loved his distinct sound.

Actually, one person was complaining about Blair and everyone else was arguing the other way. Nice try though.

Blair has a ways to go to be in Ferguson's class. I will take him now over Hawthorne any day.

This guy doesn’t know how to call a baseball game on radio. Shut up about everything and call the pitch as it happens. I wish he would listen to replays of Jim calling games and try to learn.

Ok. You got me. 3 people like Hawthorne. Interesting that you didn't post the thread.

Also, I already posted in this thread that I realize it's a personal preference thing. But, of course, some yahoo has to start some internet fight and start with the insults and flexing the internet muscles.

I graduated in ‘72. Loved John Ferguson. But a lot of people really knew him from the Saints too. Plus, there were no games on TV then so a lot of people listened to WWL.
He was a best.

But Jim is in the LASHOF for radio broadcast and was very very well respected among his peers. His calls in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s were excellent especially basketball and baseball.
One might say basketball is harder to call and Jim was great at it.

Awards and recognition

In 2015, Hawthorne was honored by the National Football Foundation with the Chris Schenkel Award as an individual with a "long, distinguished career in broadcasting with direct ties to a specific university."[8] In 2016, he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame,[9] and also received the Distinguished Service Award in Sports Journalism from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.[10]

Here you go... this isn’t MY OPINION and I take it you didn’t listen at all to him calling basketball in the ‘80’s or baseball in the ‘90s. JH was GREAT at calling basketball games. He didn’t win those awards for no reason.
I was a John Ferguson fan during most of my days. God I miss radio broadcasts. When i couldn’t make the games I always had WWL on and listened to him.

I did actually listen to him back then with my dad.

As far as the hall of fame thing is concerned, I agree with the other poster that it was a longevity thing. shite, Mainieri is in the Hall of Fame and a large portion of the LSU fan base wants him gone. The Hall of Fame isn't necessarily the measuring stick when it comes to whether people like the way someone does something.

There are music groups in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame that I'm not a fan of and I'm sure there are some you don't like as well. It's all preference on what style you like.

Hodson to Fuller, Warren Morris and y’all remember that. I bet you didn’t hear any of the big calls live because you grew up just watching it on TV. In fact most of y’all onky WATCHED that game and bring up something you didn’t hear live.

He got excited, read the wrong number and made a mistake. I’m sure you never made a mistake like most of the Rant. That was done at the back end of his career versus the prime. It was his time to retire. No doubt. But to say he was garbage or bad, is simply complete garbage.

I get where your coming from. But, like I said in the other thread, in '07 he referred to Derry Beckwith as Chase Pittman when Beckwith got hurt. They wore different numbers, different color skin and Pittman wasn't even on the team. He spent the entire first half talking about how he couldn't figure out why Hester was wearing the number 10 when it was just his jersey folded. He made those kind of mistakes all the time. It's his job to get that stuff right and I prefer to hear it done correctly.

Umm I have been watching listening and going to games since 1972 so I have a pretty good frame of reference. Not to mention I have lived all over US and heard plenty of radio play by play guys who put Hackthorne to shame.

As far as Hunt he got excited and mistook a wr for a db who did not even play offense for 1 play????

Then due to his pride and ego he had the gall to redub the game broadcast with him making the correct call?

Good Riddance

Don't sweat it. It's just more examples of cynics pointing at "the man in the arena".
I know plenty of these types that only listened to try to catch Jim in a mistake and be first to report on TD.

Blair fricked up a call or 2 the other night and nobody even said shite in game thread, and if it had been Hawthorne there would have been 3 threads about it on front page of tRant.
