Competition for College Admissions in Texas is unreal

Just found out my daughter didn’t get into Texas or Texas A&M.
She got CAP for Texas
She got Texas A&M Blinn Team offer
That being said my son went through this same thing last year. He didn’t get into Texas but he did get auto accepted into Texas A&M. He chose to go to UT-Dallas
Now the unreal part. This is not a humble brag on my kids, this is the facts
My son graduated in the Top 17% of his class at a Katy ISD school. He had a 4.2 GPA and a 30 ACT. Because of the AP courses the kids take there were >100 kids above 4.0 in his class of 480 kids with three kids over 4.5 and two over 4.6. The valedictorian had a 4.69 GPA
My daughter will graduate in the Top 26% in her class with a 3.97 GPA and 31 ACT. She has never made less than a B but she did not take as many AP classes as my son.
This isn’t good enough to get in to the two big state schools? Holy shite, WTF is going on here? Texas has auto enrollment for top 7% and TAMU has it for Top 25%
The Top 25% in my daughter’s class is still above 4.0 and is about 160 kids
Last year when my son went to spring testing at LSU he saw some kids he grew up with in Lafayette that went to STM. They had taken 4-6 AP Courses in HS, my son took 15. My daughter took 10.
With online courses there are kids in her class that have taken 18-20 AP Courses in HS. The valedictorian in her class also has a 4.69 GPA.
There is a Facebook group in our area that counsels Parents here on maximizing and manipulating the scheduling process to get the highest possible GPA. One thing they do is take non-AP courses like PE online or their senior year to minimize the impact of non-5.0 courses on their transcript

4.2 GPA is only the top 17% of his class?

Academically Texas and Texas aTm are on par with Ivy League schools. Great schools.
High schools in Texas are great as well. Not sure why anyone would raise a family in La if they had an opportunity to move.

I hear lsu is easy to get into. Beats the hell out of Texas Tech. Take her to Lubbock and she will be grateful to be in Baton Rouge

Otherwise Texas State is really underrated
It prob seems shitty to her aiming for ut, but they have some good programs. I hear health care administration is really strong there

It really really is. They'll take anyone from Texas while being strangely choosy when it comes to Louisiana citizens. LSU is a strange place.

Sul Ross is nice
I would have liked to go there if I knew it existed in HS.

I would recommend LSU but apparently they are only accepting 3 stars and 70 year olds.

Poor guy. You’ve enjoyed thinking your kids were superior for almost a decade.
Now you have to face the fact that they are average.
Texas is a highly sought after school nationally, and Texas A&M is also a place where people go to school.
I’m not saying they are academically poor institutions. But they aren’t exactly Harvard.
Also, I know schools are different, so I am not an expert on the subject, but I never understood high schools awarding more than a 4.0. What the frick does having a 4.2 mean?

Top25 percentile was practically a guaranteed acceptance 10-15 years ago.

How about sending her to a private university in the North East?

alot of Texas seniors are opting to go to alabama though,I hear...I know bama has marketed the hell out of Texas and it's paying off in spades. helps to have a beast of a football program to help with the excitement.

shite u of Houston is a fun place for a college kid. Pro sports, tons of bar tending jobs. Chance to build future connections in Houston cause she ain’t living in CS either way.
Maybe the best place for her is right there and she doesn’t realize
ETA: still close enough to get money from you

New Orleans kids have been doing this for decades.

She is either going to LSU or UTSA and do CAP to get into Texas at Austin
LSU goes out of their way to bring in Texas kids. Especially Cypress, Katy, Sugar Land and The Woodlands kids. I kind of hope she goes to LSU but I think she is leaning to UTSA for CAP
We chose Katy for the schools and we have no regrets.

When LSU played Texas in the CWS in 2009, one of the ways their student section talked shite to ours was by saying “At least we can get into UT, LSU was the backup for most of you.”
Not sure how many Texas natives were in the LSU crowd that night, but the UT fans got a kick out of that one.
